I took my touch out for coffee and was able to pick up several wi-fi connections around my local town but they obviously ask for a password, If your in say McDonalds and they have wirless access there, how do you know the logging on info and do they all charge?, I naively expected them all to be free and easily accesable

wi-fi (or wiffy as I like to call it lol) on the touch is easy to understand anything with a padlock on its a no no unless you know login.

mcdonalds I believe charge you to use the wi-fi as far as I know so maybe they offer a per customer key (dont quote me on that)

I recently picked up two open WiFi hot spots in a McDonalds with my PDA but could only log on to one by giving only my email address.
It was BTOpenzone and WiFi Zone - The Cloud.

Macdonalds is free and provided by the Cloud, this was announced about a month ago and is intended to be in all Macdonalds this year I think.

The BT open zone one was prossibly a nearby one or a yet to be updated one. I've logged on in macdonalds several times without a password or anything. However I am registered with the Cloud already so maybe that was why. They use your ipod touch's mac address to register you.

To add to the confusion BT openzone isn't free to cloud users, but The cloud is free to BT openzone users.

I have also come across several wifi connections called free public wifi and been unable to connect to them, that just seems wrong!
