Recording a .wav file from AV SPDIF out?
Derek S

Hi all,

I'm building a PC based Jukebox which I intend to load my 300 plus cd's using lossless compression (FLAC or APE) to preserve original quality.

Output will be via the PC card digital (SPDIF), relying on the DAC in my Denon AV receiver to decode thus effectivley bypassing the lower quality DAC of the PC card.

Loading the CD music is is easy, however I also want to record my vinyl collection.

I could connect my Phono preamp direct to the PC line level inputs on the PC soundcard however I do not want to rely on the questionable DAC quality of the PC card. I could buy an expensive souncard (M-Audio or whatever), however this seems a bit ott.

As the chosen soundcard has Digital in, I am considering leaving the Phono connected to the Denon, relying on the Denon's DAC to output via digital, which in turn will feed into the PC Digital in.

I'm trying esablish if this is a viable option because I am unsure if, or how the incoming digital stream (stereo) can be saved to a .Wav file for further processing.

Can anyone advise?

Cheers

Derek

mate of mine bought a usb record deck for the exact purpose of getting vinyl into *.wav and then sold it back to ebay for about what he paid. cant vouch for the quality but he said it was fine
regarding taking the phono to amp route i wouldn't have thought that a standard line in would have the neccessary RIAA equalisation that a record deck required ?? normally a dedicated i/p on a hifi amp not a/v amp ??

Hi - Re the phono to amp route, I actually have 2 options, my dedicated Phono preamp via line in or (unusally) the Denon has a MM cartridge in with RIAA etc.

Actually, since posting I have found my assumptions to be incorrect in any case - The Denon won't let me select any analogue input - Digital output in the setup menu ie no analog to Digital coversion in the amp, only vice versa

Looks like back to plan "A" - a decent quality PC soundcard!

Thanks
anyway.

Try an RIAA preamp feeding your existing sound card, and see how it performs - it may well be better than you think!. You need the preamp anyway, so you're not wasting anything trying it.
