Derek (Blonde, Male Pro Dancer)
Really gets on my nerves. Makes me cringe. He's such a cheesy
American stereotype. ![]() More of a disco dancer for me as well. Hope he's not in the final. |

That's Derek Hough, Julianne's older brother.

Neverindoubt:
I really like Derek. He came to live in England when he was still very young. He lived with Shirley & Corky Ballas when Julianne danced with Mark. He, Mark & J all went to stage school in London (The Italia Conti - I THINK). The 3 of them formed a singing/dancing trio called 2bs1g (2 boys 1 girl!) and were extremely good. All 3 decided to stop competing - a HUGE loss to English dance competitor-wise as all 3 are brilliant, worldranking, Latin dancers - to go on stage in London. Derek's first role was in Footloose. As far as I know, they only returned to dancing to do dwts. He's already had quite a career for someone still so young - he's only 21, and to be honest, if you met him I don't think you would find him in the least cheesey. On the other hand, I respect your impression - it would be a boring old world if we had the same impressions of people, and everything else. |

Hah! I thought this would be an appreciation thread.
I'm afraid I disagree NeverInDoubt, I think he's a great dancer and charismatic and versatile performer. For a relatively young guy I think he shows a lot of maturity. I do like that he has confidence and ambition without appearing arrogant. It's a shame he couldn't have extended his stay in London and take part on SCD this year. |

He's 22, and also was the main choreographer for Bruno's Team in this Summer's DanceX show, resulting in them winning.

I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with Neverindoubt.

He was in west end in Footloose = excellent dancer. He does have a bit of a cheesy all American grin but maybe he's happy!

I think he's fantastic! Loved watching him quickstep with Shannen, he seems so versatile.

Ditto. I adore Derek, and out of all of the male pros he's one of the best of showcasing his partner. |

Ditto on all the Derek love- I think he's great and adore his choreography. I remember really enjoying his quickstep with Jenny last season, even with the fall!

I'm a big Derek, Julianne, and Mark fan, as well.
I think they're all brilliant and exceptional and make DWTS really fun to watch.Derek was amazing on the DWTS tour last winter - he was in every single number and danced his heart out! He's lovely in person, as is Mark. |

He's the one dancer from DWTS I would love to see on Strictly as he's the only pro who choreograph great ballroom and latin.

I absolutely love Derek. He is so much fun to watch and I love his dancing and his choreography. He does the best with all of it I think. I was very fortunate to get the chance to see him on the winter tour and as wonderful as he is to watch on TV he is that much more amazing in person. It's impossible to watch anyone else when he's on the floor. He got great reviews too from what I saw.

Have to agree with the OP. I used to quite like him, but this season he has started getting on my nerves. Wish he would stop trying to build his part, and the constant mugging at the camera is getting annoying.
I get the impression that the z-list status he gained from his showmance with Shannon has gone to his head a bit. |

Hi all, my first post...
Are you all watching both Strictly and DWTS? I really thought Derek's first dance with Brooke looked really familiar, but I don't want to say anything and spoil it for anyone. So should I assume that people have seen their first dance, now that it's been on UK tv? |

Welcome Philly
.I think Derek is a breathe of fresh air to DWTS. It's a shame our Strictly doesn't have a Derek and Julianne. |

I thought a lot of the choreography was lifted from Alesha and Matthew's dance from Strictly....even the music was similar! It started to really bug me the more I watched it. In fact, it's still bugging me!

I saw Derek in Footloose, the show wasn't all that, but he was fab. He and Mark are my fave male pros on DWTS, do have a soft spot for Maks as well though!

Huge loss to the ballroom world when all three (Derek, Julianne and Mark) retired so young from the latin competitive circuit. They had just opened the door with their incredible success in the youth ranks and it could have have led to a lot of success.
However, it was their choice and if they are happy, that is all that matters.

All 3 decided to go down the stage dance road after going to stage school. And yes I agree a great loss to the Latin dance world, 3 VERY talented young people, but Shirley Ballas - Mark's mum & Derek & Julianne's 'foster' mum was apparently delighted at their decision.
