could someone advise if using either of the above in conjunction with a standard sky box can I record on the sony the feed from the sky box please or will the sony only record from the tuners?

You can record from any external box including Sky.

many thanks now of course which one to plump for.

They're identical except for the size of hard drive. The 160 Gigs of the 870 should be fine for general use.

The 970 offers 250 gigs - this can be useful if you have a camcorder and want to offload footage at best quality, do some basic editing and then copy it to DVD.
