when does a fan become a fanatic?

At what point does liking a particular celeb/zeleb or pofessional become very close to the wild-eyed Jacko fan, releasing doves?

I have noticed that some threads/supporters etc will literally not hear a bad word about either "their" pro or "their" star. It is quite funny when some even respond to any comment about "their" person.

There are some people that I prefer to others, sometimes because they have further to go, sometimes because you watch some-one blossom (I felt that with Colin), and sometimes because they are just more likable than others or more talented. There are some people that I can't take to (like Matt this year, really don't know why!) but I thought he did a lovely job on the AS. But no-one I would defend to the death!

Anyway, when do you think the line is crossed - or do you not know until you are there?

Good question. I don't really don't get why some of the arguments become so heated. I've been supporting Matt and Flavia for instance, but really don't take offence at the fact that you don't like Matt much.

I think a fan is delighted when other people share the same enthusiasm, whereas a fanatic gets angry when other people do not share the same enthusiasm.

I think that is a fantastic explaination!

I think it is sad that everything is divided into luvahs n hatahz or whatever. It does actually put me off soem couples - in the same way that dove-lady put me off jacko (even more off than I already was, that is!).

Ultimately, these are real people, so they have good days, bad days, they like, they dislaike, they make mistakes, they attract and they put people off.

^ well put.

I know I verge on fanatic occasionally but have made a big effort not to be recently, and have (tried to) defend even some people I am not that keen on when they have got attacked.

Do you know when you're over the edge? Not sure....

There seem to be a few Eve Harringtons among Karen's fans. One even has Karen's future PA as her location. That freaks me out.

You only have to read this board - read some of the threads, to realise that there are a lot of fanatics on here. They are so obsessed with their favourite dancer/celebrity, that they hate anyone who has opposing views. They hate the judges (who dare to criticise their favourites), they hate Bruce (who might make a tiny joke aimed at one of their favourites) and they hate all the posters on here who dare to criticise their favourite. They really are an obsessed bunch - and they are usually either the Kate fans or the Kelly haters.

If you read this board and then go out into the big wide world, you'll realise that the people on this board are very different than the normal public out there. Thankfully this board only represents less than 1% of the general public. Phew, what a relief.

I visit this board, but only when Strictly Come Dancing is on. The rest of the year I don't bother with it. There are some people that spend their whole life on here.

So, if you want to know the difference between fan and fanatics, just visit certain threads on here and you'll soon spot them. Start with the I love Kate threads!

I will defend the people I like but agree that the people I like might not be everyones cup of tea - I get narked and defend even more when people on here make "personal" comments about celebs etc - by all means attack the dancing as that is what the forum is for but pleae STOP being SO personal about the celebs and other forumites opinions Rant over

when does a fan become a fanatic?

I can answer that one, it's when you speak about Karen Hardy or Ballroom Bill in less than revered tones. Some completely lose the plot.

I do agree that some of the posts can be quite personal, in respect of the celebrities and other forumites. It's easy to be drawn into an argument. Sometimes I go to post into a thread and then I think "no, don't go there" and so like sara-flute I have to exercise some self control.

Having said that, the arguments can be quite entertaining!

It is sad, and scary, when fandom gets out of hand. I don't visit all the threads so I cannot comment on what goes on in most cases. When competitiveness seeps in about meeting, talking with , being 'best pals' with, it becomes scary for the unsuspecting who find themselves accidently in the right place at the wrong time. Sheeshhh!

Yup, exactly, and well put. I have got to the stage of trying if I feel myself getting cross to just put a persistent annoyer on my ignore list.

I don't always succeed... but I'm tryin'!

I am a fanatic thankfully not for anyone on SCD though Brendan does come close lol but for a certain driver ... Sometimes I can be blinded to him but I do try to keep an open mind, though 11 years of support makes it a little hard ...

Though V.Lady has put it brilliantly...

I'm a fanatic. Don't really care what anyone thinks of that. Like l_m says, all that location and service stuff is only a joke.

SCD/dancing happens to be something I'm passionate about so I can't help getting a little over involved sometimes.

It's just so reminiscent of Eve Harrington that makes it freaky.
