I notice that so many artists seem to mime a lot

I don't know why they have to do it - I mean, that's their job, isn't it? That's what their paid for, surely?

If a 'singer' has to mime, in my book it means they're not giving what they're paid for.

I'd be extremely p1ssed off if i went too see a 'Live' concert and there was miming or a backing track! The clue is the word 'Live'

The best concerts i have been too have all been 100% Live! There great- too much of a lack of talent and lazy performers

In a word Yes. There is no excuse in my book for a singer not singing live.

If I ever went to a gig and the artist mimed (unless it was a mime show), I'd want my money back.

They're your records on which you sing on and have had at least some creative output on. If you can't provide all of these, sod off.

I agree with you all. My favourite always sings live with a live band and backing singers. That is part of the enjoyment of the show. We get to know them all and like to see what's coming next. We are always surprised!

Apart from Concerts, I notice that when a 'singer' is on a programme to 'plug' their new music/single, that they very rarely sing live (apart from a few genuine talented singers)

Yes and no.

IMO it has to be left up to the show producers and the 'artist' or its management BUT when it happens it should be made clear to the audience that the singer is lip-synching. That should act as something of a discouragement.

My preference would be for lip-synchers to be made to use hairbrushes but, realistically, head microphones or no microphones would suffice.

The actual practice can be justified in certain limited circumstances but not the deceit.

Talking about mime, Top Of the Pops was in fact 99percent mimed which is really one of the reasons I was pleased it was axed.

I do have a memory of one artist who actually sang live and that was Howard Jones back in the 80's.

I personally think artists should sing live on TV.

If it's on some big budget, primetime show, like X Factor, Strictly or Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, or indeed in concert (that one's a no-brainer) then yes, all the time.

However, on cheapo shows like GMTV, Loose Women and This Morning, I'm not particularly fussed.

in the last few years of totp, many acts sang live, but in its heyday, (seventies) yes, almost every act mimed.

I hate miming, cannot stand it. If you cant deliver live these days, then dont bother, imo

sugababes ALWAY seem to perform live and they always do it well, i think its pointless if u dont perform live.. i have more respect for artist that perform live.. i understand that it takes more time to perform live becuase of sound checks etc, but wen i worked with booty luv once they wer late and didnt have time for a sound check and still came out with an amazing performance even tho one mic level was too low, but it was still an awesome performance!

Girls aloud piss me off as they came from a talent show and mime quite alot. When they do sing live it always sounds good (when sarah keeps her mouth shut)

But they don't any more. Only see a few mimed performances from them since Something Kinda Ooooh, and that was only GMTV ones. They sing live more often than they mime, that's for sure.

Of course they should sing live - if they don't they're cheating their fans and not being very "live" at all. Those who say they have to mime because they have dance routines to do are the biggest cheats of all as they're not singers at all, they're dancers, and probably mime because they don't want people to know that the vocals you hear on record are actually the product of a weak performance beefed up by studio trickery.

there are some classic clips of Nirvana and Muse on youtube where the both completely take the piss because they were told to mime. Nirvana on TOTPs and Muse on Alive and Kicking (where Dom and Chris switched instruments and Matt 'played' his guitar without ever actually touching it'

Loads of acts did that on TOTP, Oasis completely switched roles on "Roll With It" and Noel mimed the lyrics while Liam played his guitar.

Most of our acts here in the US mime, which is pretty poor considering we're the "huge" industry and are supposedly the ones with the top acts. I mean, look at Britney Spears, she mimes 99% of the time. Yet, people go out to see her.

Westlife seem to mime most of the time. And considering this they are stlll pretty crap at it. Shane always over exaggerates and the bookends just stand and open and close their mouths while grinning/simpering. Don't know why they mime as even though I can't stand them, Shane and Mark have good voices.

Most of todays so called singers can not sing live , all their tracks are put together in a studio , when I used to go to concerts the singer/band would never lip sink ,
I don't think they can get away with it in the states , I know a little while ago they would not be allowed on TV and mime

Thanks for that , I posted about the same time , but I was under the impression that acts were not allowed on TV and mime in the states

I don't think they should mime, but then if people want a big show at concerts, it's going to be difficult to sing in tune while dancing about the stage & it wouldn't sound nearly as good, so miming would seem a good option. Though maybe the artists should stop jumping around so much & just do what they're paid for.

I always feel that 'artists' who mime must surely feel such prats - mouthing away like that - with no sound coming out.

I s'pose neither they, not their backers have any trust that they can 'hack it' live. To me, that makes them performers, but not singers.

Someone suggested naming and shaming the mimers years ago didn't they? Wasn't it Andy Peters? He was going to introduce an all live Top of the Pops - not sure what happened there then!

They ought to decide whether they're singers or dancers. If they want to prance around as if they've got a red hot poker shoved up their arses, dressed like hookers then they shouldn't sing. Too many airbrushed bimbos who think they're performers when in reality they're just manipulated record company whores.
Stand up Girls Aloud and Pussycat Dolls, you talentless plastic bullsh*t.
