Ipod Virgin

My daughter, 9, has asked for an ipod for Christmas.

I have never had an mp3 player before although I have ripped CD's to mp3 before to play music on my laptop.

I would be grateful if someone would offer some advice on the following questions.

Do the current ipods support mp3.

With the latest Ipods can you upload mp3s without using Itunes?

How do you get music onto an ipod without downloading from Apple?

- Yes iPod supports MP3 as well as AAC (M4A)
- Would advise using iTunes as it is so much easier to use to automatically sync to the iPod and the s/w is free. You are not obliged to buy music from the iTunes Store or to have an account with them.
- You can use any download source or mp3 files already on your laptop. If you download WMA files you can convert these to MP3 or AAC with additional s/w. I personally use a program called Soundtaxi to convert files to AAC and to strip out digital rights management and then copy to the iTunes main directory. The iTune programme will automatically organise them into Artist\Album folders (unless you disable this feature).

All iPods support mp3, AAC etc
You should use iTunes - the easiest option and the only officially supported option as well although there are other programs you can get off the net. For your daughter tho plug in the iPod and everything else is automatic so would seem the best way.

You can use iTunes to rip CDs. iTunes will also each your hard drive and import into its library all of the mp3s it finds on your hard disk. You won't be able to play songs bought from another music site as their DRM prevents this.

Well seeing as the ipod is an mp3 player I would assume that it does support mp3!

Though I guess they are used for playing videos a lot now.

Which ipod are you getting her?

As far as I know all iPods support MP3, including the new line. I can personally only say yes for the iPod Touch which I have.

I didn't think there was a way to upload without using iTunes but after speaking to a friend she mentioned to me a freeware program called Media Monkey which seems to do the job. It'll also let you search for album artwork similar to iTunes but with more sources to search from.
