Just a couple of questions I would be greatful if someone could answer for me:

1. If I have DECT phone with SMS messaging facilities, such as the TG8220E from Panasonic connected up to a VOIP service such as sipgate or voip.co.uk, can I send and receive text messages on the phone in the same way as I can with a mobile phone?

2. Again, with a phone such as the one mentioned above with a built-in answer phone connected up via a VOIP service, if someone calls me and im not available, will the built-in answer phone from the phone kick in in the same way as it would if it were connected to a standard BT landline, or can I only use the answerphone service(s) that are offered from the VOIP provider?

I'm with voip.co.uk:

1) I'm unable to send texts, if someone texts my voip.co.uk number it doesn't come through as a text even though I have a dect phone with SMS capability, the phone rings and the message is read by an automated system.

2) Yes your answer machine will work fine. You can set your voip.co.uk account not to use their answering service.

As for Sipgate, I can't answer sorry.

My response not quite on subject, but very allied one...

I have a BT landline on their '2' tariff and hence their SMS service on it and my DECT phone happily sends up to the 100 free a month and receives them.

Last week I was trying out my DECT phone on o2 Wireless Box with its VoIP ATA with FXO/FXS and plugged my landline into it. An incoming SMS on the BT landline caused the phone to ring with no-one there when one picked it up. Later on I wired up the DECT as normal (ie without the o2 box) and the SMS then came through properly.

I have yet to research/work more on the configuration of the o2 box (Speedtouch ST780WL) to see if it can be made to behave properly ie transparently to those SMSs.
