Perhaps if you mentioned what it was?, how it's connected?, and exactly what your problem is? - then we could offer advice?.

Its not faulty. Very few can actually switch ratios correctly from an external source. If it has an inbuilt freeview tuner it should be able to do it on that though.

its a phillips 42 not sure about model number - was purcahsed from tesco. no setting or feature anywhere.

havent tried freeview yet. hopefully it can manage that!

its a shame that these tvs cant do this or indeed, the set top boxes - sky+ etc.. cant spike a signal so that it switches the aspect ratio.

verty tedious

Almost all newer TVs will autoswitch when receiving a signal via scart - BUT, you must be using a fully wired scart lead and you must have the external digibox or DVD player set up to send a widescreen signal (not 4:3 or 4:3 letterbox), and also to send a non-widescreen signal when displaying a 4:3 image (i.e. if watching Sky HD via HDMI). You must also have the TV set up to autoswitch - normally an option in either the display settings or in the aspect ratio selection.

And of course, the source that you are watching must have the widescreen switch set on it. Don't expect a DVD that you have recorded yourself to switch the picture to 16:9 even if it is an anamorphically compressed picture that you have recorded - there are still far more DVD recorders that don't add the WS switch to anamorphic recordings that they make than ones that do.

My old widescreen CRT couldn't autoswitch, but my new LCD does. So I'm in the opposite boat to you Steve. However, my new TV isn't a Philips.

The OP is complaining that it doesn't autoswitch, not that he can't switch it manually.

apart from phillips!

a few other design flaws, like the remote which has a rounded back side so it slides of arm rests... general layout of some buttons on the remote are also annoying as well as the side inputs being well hidden.

yup have this

Again, this is a phillips! it does say made in poland on the back of tv - maybe there technical r&d department are also from poland - no offense to polish people but its not exactly the hub of electrical desgin

yup
