Simplest Question Help!
Hi JUST REALISED the title should be "CONNECTION"
ah im too tired, anyways I was having a go last night and now i am puzzled as to what I'm doing.. I am not expert nor novice Is this at all possible, to connect tv, sky, dvd recorder and vhs recorder at the same time. vhs and dvd recorder is recorded from sky. Basically ive got panasonic 32" flat screen tv with 2 scarts in the back and 1 in the front (red, white, yellow) VHS panasonic got 2 (dodgy) scarts in the back sky got 2 scarts (1 says TV and VIDEO) dvd recorder got 2 scarts (NO MARKING) ---- previous i only had dvd player, and the connection to that was simply tv-sky (main thick scart) sky-video (main thick scart) dvd - tv (red white n yellow scart) that allowed me to watch sky on av1 and dvd on av3 ---- now that i've got dvd recorder.. its not the same connection is it? or is it? any suggestions would help please |

Think about it - you want your Sky box to feed three separate things - your TV, your VCR, and your DVDR. Now Sky has four outputs - RF, two scarts and s-video. Sky HD has six outputs - the four already mentioned, plus HDMI and component.
If your TV or your DVD recorder will accept s-video input, then you can use that output from your Sky box, leaving the two scarts on the Sky box to feed the other two pieces of kit. Also, if your DVD recorder supports component output, and your TV accepts component input (most HD Ready ones do nowadays), then you can use that method to connect your DVDR to your TV. Leaving the two scarts free for the Sky box and the VCR. The red, white and yellow input on the front of the TV are presumably composite TV and audio inputs - again, a lot of DVD recorders support this as output, so you might get away with connecting your DVDR to your TV in that manner - but the picture won't be as good as it would be through RGB scart. Your VCR should not need connecting directly to your TV using scart, as long as it is connected to the VCR scart socket on your Sky box. This will allow it to record Sky (because when Sky is playing and the VCR is recording, the signal goes out of the Sky box and into the VCR via this scart connection). Conversely, when the video is playing a tape, the signal goes in the opposite direction, from VCR to Sky, then the Sky box will send this signal via its TV output to the TV. It really depends whether you will ever want to record Sky to videotape anymore, given that you now own a DVD recorder. And also, how often are you going to watch videotape from now on, and if you are, does it still need connecting to your TV via scart, or can you get away with just using an RF aerial connection to watch your old poor quality video tapes? |

Also if the DVDR does HDMI or component you might want to connect that up. With this system you can watch any of VCR, Sky and DVD all on the one TV scart in RGB when applicable. You can record from VCR and Sky to DVD and Sky to VCR. You cannot record DVD to VCR (why would you want to?). |

Using bobcar's method, you also cannot watch Sky if you are recording anything other than Sky on your DVDR.

For most people the benefits of this method of connection (ease of use and quality of recording) far outweigh the minor disadvantages. Having a DVD recorder and not using RGB is perverse. |
