Home Cinema Sound hooked to PC
Hi, i am looking at hooking up my speakers and sub to my pc through the amp.
Can you tell me if it would work ok? the link below show what i have in mind, weather i'm right or not is a different matter! i am wondering if the subwoofer would work with the pc souncard. would the centre output be split to centre and subwoofer? http://www.bradford-dolphin.co.uk/sound.jpg thanks for any help Mike |

If your sound card is 5.1 then you should have an output for the subwoofer? That's what the .1 is. There should be L&R front, L&R surround, centre, and subwoofer, making 6 in total.
Check that the 3.5mm to RCA adaptors that you're thinking of have a stereo plug at one end which split the left and right signals into two separate RCA plugs. Rather than a mono one which simply duplicates the 3.5mm signal into two RCAs. Your idea to split the centre output will work up to a point but the signal level will be reduced for the centre speaker (don't know if it will be enough to make it noticeable) and you won't get bass sounds that are intended for the other 4 speakers. The .1 channel is really intended for low-frequency special effects rather than enhancing the bass from the other speakers, although your amp might have a setting to pass all the bass frequencies from all channels to the subwoofer. |

Ah - just checked the specs for my sound card and the bass channel is indeed combined with the centre channel as you've picked up on. Looks like it's a "stereo" socket, as the front and rear ones will be, and you need a stereo splitter 3.5mm/RCA lead as for the L&R speakers. You'll just need to work out which RCA plug is the centre and which is the subwoofer! So yes, I think you're probably correct in your diagram, except as I mentioned make sure your leads are stereo splitters, not mono ones.

Digital output is not the same thing as discrete 5.1 analogue outputs. Have you got a separate output on your sound card for digital? The amp you've linked to above has got a coaxial digital input so you could in fact use that single connection instead of the 6 RCA connections. But it doesn't have an optical digital input, so check what your sound card has.

Where's the Centre/Bass output that you put into your diagram?
And why do you think it won't work? As I've said, you can put the Front/Rear/Centre outputs into the 6 inputs on the amplifier as you indicated on your diagram, or you can use the single digital output to connect to the single digital input on the amp (see the left hand side of the amp on the digram). Or is the diagram not of your particular sound card? |

I think so. Presumably it'll just be a straightforward mono 3.5mm jack plug to RCA phono plug.
