Home cinema speaker positioning
My TV room is 18ft x 10ft. I'm buying a 37" plasma. It'll be going in the corner at the end of the shortest wall, I can't put it in the centre as there is a fireplace there. Where would you recommend i put the front speakers? Either side of the tv in the corner or at both corners of the room? (obviously back surrounds are going in rear corners)

I have a similar situation. I have the speakers positioned about a foot from either side of the TV.
Because one of the speakers is in a corner the volume (especially the bass) is amplified by the corner. So I have to have the volume of the other one turned up a bit. I don't have a real centre speaker, but have set up the amp to have a 'phantom' speaker for voices, etc. which distributes the centre sounds equally between the two. It actually works quite well. If I had the speakers in the corners then the voices would be coming from around 4 feet from the right of the TV.

It's hard to say since the positioning of the center speaker is dictated by the TV (center) and hence effects the position of the remaining speakers and their overall surround effect.
Put them next to the TV either side of the center and you will get an uneven effect from I suspect every listening position but that could be even worse than having the centre virtually in the same area as one front speaker if they are placed in the corners. Now don't use this next bit as good advice but my parents setup (done by me) is similar to yours and I had a seperate center (not using the TV's own) which was on the side of the TV nearest the centre of the room. That pushed the center speaker far enough away from the left front to give a reasonable balance especially with a little delay added to the left front speaker. It seems to work ok given the mixture of plain stereo/surround and DD/DTS from DVD but it's a bodge job at best
