HD on Freeview by 2009. Will this affect TF5810 sales?

Interesting story ...

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitalt...-freeview.html

For me, that makes the purchase of the TF5810 not worth it. But, as others have kindly suggested, I might get the existing model to tidy me over.

At this rate the new model might be out of date within a year of it being launched! OK, there might be a little bit of time before products kick in, but I think it's highly likely that manufacturers will be quick off the mark, and I'll be there with my debit card

Exciting times indeed!

No, it's far too obvious. Maybe we should all have one?

Hi guys. I hope you're all having a good evening. Here's some more info from the BBC website, hot off the press.

Can somebody offer me some advice? I misread the "could" as "definitely would" and so I immediately put my TF5800 and non-HD CRT TV in the bin. Can I sue Topfield for this? I feel bad because I liked the picture. (I realise now that I should have waited until 1st Jan 2009 before putting anything in the bin. )

"Non-binding"? As good old Sam said, "Not worth the paper it is written on.

I agree with you, gomezz! Who knows? What are the odds if it being ready by 2009? What are the odds of the Inland Revenue losing 25 million names?

What we can be sure of is that we are seeing an increasing, stronger impetus to have HD ready on Freeview as soon as possible, given all the recent news articles.

For me personally, I'm looking for 5 years out of my next major purchase. HD on Freeview will almost certainly be available by then. Therefore the more expensive TF5810 is not for me.

I think the credibility of that story, despite being from the horses mouth (via some random journalist of course) is diminished somewhat by their noting that you'd need an HD-compatible TV to be able to watch HD. Really? Well I never. I though I'd be able to use my wireless (radio, that is).

hehe I think most BBC articles have to include the "spelling it out" part as well as the ground breaking news, due to their wide range of readers. It's a necessary evil, but doesn't diminish the BBC's impeccable reputation for accurate and unbiased reporting.

By the way, I had to use a computer keyboard, monitor and mouse to produce this reply

I am getting a strong feeling of deja vu.

Or is it just Groundhog Day again?

Is this an entry level machine for beginners then? From reading your other posts, I got this impression that this was not the case. How does the price compare to the TF5810 and TF5800?

I don't have one -- I'm a moron. Although I've heard that's not an obstacle these days.

During a visit to the local Sony and Panasonic shops I asked them the question regarding the possibility of any of their HD televisions being able to pick up a HD Freeview signal.

Both shops knew about the possible changes.

In the Panasonic shop they stated that none of their TV's could pick up a DVB-T2 transmission, but hoped that some from their new range due out next spring would.

The Sony shop stated that two TV's from their range had the hardware to pick up the DVB-T2 signal, with the possible need for a firmware upgrade when time comes. (The X3000/3500 and W3000 range). Looking the the technical spec on their Web Site only states it has a digital receiver, with no further information.

Its put me off gettng a new HD ready TV or a new PVR
