Somewhat irrelevant I know but are these still in use? I had a couple around 1990-92, one just "bleeped", the other displayed very short messages.

I expect mobile phones have driven them into oblivion, but they were a good idea in their day!

*tunes his scanner to 153-154 MHz*

Yep, sounds like they're still active

As someone who works in the industry, I can tell you many, many, many local councils and most (if not all) hospitals still use them as do local government and utility companies.

Now that is interesting. I can certainly see them being useful in a very localised situation such as a hospital. I'm not sure what advantages they have for other users such as local government and utilities. After all they are only one way communication as opposed to SMS on mobile phones. Who is still selling them and what's available? By their nature they are very simple devices and I can't see much scope for innovation but I am could be wrong about that.

You make valid points. However, pagers have one simple advantage over phones....there is only a monthly contract fee and no other charges...ie, no call charges and no text fees. Train companies use them too.

BTW all mobile phones happily double up as pagers as long as you have the software to 'page' them; some (such as the Sony Z7 I think) could send paging messages directly; I use a Psion organiser.
