Toshiba 40XF355D Impressions
I am thinking of buying a Toshiba 40XF355D (the one with the really narrow bezel round the screen).
I have seen it on demo running a HD dvd which looked pretty good but the showroom couldn't demo it on Freeview Standard Definition which is what I will be watching for the for a while yet. Has anyone got this set? I would be most interested in their opinion on SD picture quality. I know it will be worse than HD, but a couple of online reviews suggest the SD quality is worse than Sony sets for example. Thanks Kevin |

Generally we rank Toshiba about fourth, based solely on SD picture quality in the shop. Sony are the best, with Samsung/Sharp equal second, and Toshiba fourth.
All four are good, the differences aren't that great. |

Don't have an answer to your question regarding SD picture quality but as it is currently available for under the 'magic' £1000 I would like to know if you or anyone here now has experience of this model?
I too won't be moving on to HD in the very near future ... is the lack of 24p a consideration? Game playing is unlikely to be a priority of mine but an upscaling DVD recorder will no doubt be a must. Any views gratefully received, Nigel are you there ?

... further to my previous post I now see that it is '24 fps compatible' - anyone know if that means something similar to 24p?
Or, not quite or even not similar at all ... Sorry to show my ignorance of such stuff!

My Father in law bought this tv for £1099 on boxing day .Being over 75 and not very technical he paid £45 for installation and setup by the store .When I looked at the set after delivery the picture was terrible .After going through the menu's all he got for his £45 was the set plugged in to the mains and the scart attached to his sky box ,everything was set to manufacturers factory settings (the store had done nothing in the setup). After tweaking through the setups I have now got a good picture ....though nowhere near as good as my 2 year old Hitachi 42 plasma.Sorry if I start a plasma v lcd debate but I have yet to see a large screen lcd beat a large screen plasma on picture quality. My advice would be to spend your £999 on a 42 to 50" plasma. ...and I am not an expert just a layman making comparisons. If my plasma went belly up today there is no way I would buy an LCD in a bigscreen setup .

I was about to make a new post regarding the Toshiba 40XF355D but thought i'd bump this one instead!
Just wondered if anyone has any experience of viewing regular Sky (not HD) through the set, is the picture quality acceptable? |

What is really telling with SD though is if the program is filmed in HD (like many Sky one and sports events) the quality is really good ... but if not (Spanish sports, old 80's tv shows) you are better off with a CRT. Got mine 3 weeks ago and the quality with my PS3 is WOW |

Got mine yesterday and it is really good with SD DVD and live Sky. Will be upgrading player to Blu-Ray in due course which I expect to be uber.
However, picture is not so good with some Sky+ playback, looks like there are really small insects crawling around in areas of shade. Any ideas, what I need to adjust/turn off? |
