I'm thinking of buying my OH a Slingbox

I'm thinking of getting my OH a Slingbox for Christmas, but I don't know much about how they work & I know I'll have to do the setting-up etc. He'd be using it to watch shows on his laptop (Dell Inspiron 1501), so my questions are:

How does the signal get to the laptop? Does it use your download allowance from your ISP (we've got broadband) or a separate connection or signal?

The shows he's be watching would normally be on Sky. Would he have to leave the Sky+ box on the required channel, or does the Slingbox come with a remote that can be used to change the channels?

If you use a Slingbox with a laptop, can you record the shows to the laptop to watch/burn later or are they encrypted in some way to stop you?

Can the Slingbox record/store shows for watching later, or is it "watch now, lose forever"?

Lastly, how good are they? If I buy one, he'll get all hyper about having it & then never let me hear the end of it if it's poor watching quality or doesn't always receive the shows/channels expected.
Thanks.

The slingbox plugs into your sky box and your router, the signal then travels through your home network and the internet.

It will use your download allowance at both ends (sending and receiving)

The sling box has a remote dongle thing that can turn on the sky+, channel and even set recordings.

you cannot record to the laptop

They only way to record would be on sky+, then watch them off there via Slingbox.

Its not the best quality, but good, i use mine on my phone and as a small picture in the corner of my laptop whilst working, ok in full screen but not 100%.

Many thanks. Looks like it won't be worth him having then until we sort out a connection with an unlimited broadband allowance, as his cricket, racing & music will use up loads. More bleeding expense - the things you do for love.
