Apartment burgled - Technics SCDV-290 stolen: Advice needed please!
OGB
25-11-2007
I was burgled a couple of months ago and they trashed my apartment and stole my Technics SCDV-290 along with many other things.

I'm now in a position to replace it, but wanted some advice. I loved this system as it had x5 DVD/CD tray, 360w total output and the surround sound was able to frighten the life out of me, and entertain my neighbours with a banging b-line too.

They were kind enough to just steal the system and left all the connections including the main power line and all 5 speakers.

These units are now discontinued, however, I've managed to find an online supplier where I can purchase it again for £305 including delivery.

The SCDV 290 doesn't have DAB radio, and prior to purchase, I read many warnings about the possibility of the laser function on the multi-tray system being very unreliable, however, I didn't have any problems with it in 5 years.

I've been trying to find something else similar, with a full logic double cassette player, possibly DAB, a (multi-tray) DVD/CD system, but not had any luck. (It doesn't have to have x5, but at least 2 preferably)

Can anyone advise me of a midi component system that has comparable features please?

The supplier is duck.co.uk, and I've read an assorted bag of reviews about their service and I'm a little worried. They seem to be the Ryan Air of the electrical world, no frills, delivery and supply issues but eventually you get what it says on the tin. Does anyone have any experience on this retailer and/or any advice from ordering from them? I've checked and they seem to be the only place with stock at the cheapest price - I think I paid double that when it first came out.

With regard to the issue of 'price', whilst I can replace the unit for just over £300, I am willing to spend more for quality and features. There's a Bose outlet in Ashford, and though my heart wants my Technics back, I wouldn't be adverse to starting all over again, bearing in mind I still have 5 speakers.

I really want to do my research and get the system ordered and in my apartment before Christmas as it's been very quiet in here recently, and as they stole both my ipods and portable dvd player I've been pretty miserable.

Thanks in advance.

Should I buy the same model given that it is discontinued?

Are there any systems currently available that have the same/similar if not better features?

Does anyone have any experience in ordering from duck.co.uk?

Thanks.

Thanks for that. Still looking around though. Didn't really want to buy separates but the spec looks impressive.
