Not officially but you can get it off eBay, be expected to pay around £500.

if you are prepared to go to germany and can speak german, you should be able to pick up a sim free iphone for approx £715 and no contract attached. this is due to competition laws in germany (or something like that - vodafone complained that it was unfair that one network should have it, and now t-mobile have confirmed it is being sold sim free)

but havent apple been kind enough to set each handset to the native language of the country it is being sold at (does that make sense) ie you buy a handset in france, the only language you can get on the handset is french?

Yep if you put a PAYG SIM in them. Unlocked means just that, you can put any sim in it.

i thought there was something reported that some people have unlocked their handset, only for it to update via itunes, and for it to seize completely, rendering the handset useless (paperweight)

Yeah, I've got a Mac, and I'm thinking about getting myself an iPhone for Christmas, but I want to stay on pay-as-you-go, so I think that's what I'll be doing. I've downloaded the 1.1.1 firmware already just in case Apple take it down.

There are very simple ways to roll back and unlock it again now, the bricking was sorted out about 3 months ago, do keep up

Besides anyone who does an upgrade even though it asks you twice if you're sure you want to do it, and warns you it will brick unlocked handsets is pretty much an idiot anyway, it's not like you can do it accidently!

As the current bootloader & baseband hasn't been hacked - which is why there is no full unlock as yet: Pretty much anything you do is always recoverable.

I screwed up the 'unlock' of my phone twice, leaving me with a phone that wouldn't boot normally. On both occasions I just booted in recovery mode and restored 1.1.1 firmware in iTunes and started again - 3rd time was the charm: don't do the iphuc1.1.2 jailbreak over a USB hub, or at least a Dlink one; it kept going into suspend mode and screwing the flash.

It may be sorted at the moment , I would bet a £1 to a penny they are well aware of the current situation and are actively working on a worakaround to close the unofficial unlock

You don't have to be informed it POPS A MESSAGE ON THE SCREEN asking you twice if you're sure you want to update and brings an info box telling you it will brick unlocked phones, you don't need to be Einstein to figure it out.

Plus they won't be working on anything of the sort... This will all be irrelevant in the next month anyway, now that Apple have to sell the iPhone unlocked in France and Germany so you can bet future updates will have to support unlocked phones now, either that or the hacking dev team will find the part of the iphone which tells itunes its a legit unlocked phone.

Apple aren't gonna brick the unlocked phones bought on the continent, so this won't matter with the next update i'll wager.

I notice that the cost of an unlocked french phone has now been announced (Euro 635). Interesting that it is cheaper than an unlocked, no contract, N95 (Euro 829), given all the gainsayers in this forum carping on about how expensive the iPhone is.

N95 on Nokia.co.uk is £459, which equates to 643Euro (give or take 5 Euros depending on which site you use).

Even so I can't see anyone choosing the N95 when you could have the iPhone for the same or slightly less!

Well I am not going to be drawn into some silly argument with you. But in the world of consumer electronic pricing, the more sophisticated and feature-packed a product is, then the more it costs to buy. The fact that both are around the same price would infer that either one is grossly over-priced or one is strangely under-priced.

As for anyone choosing to buy an N95. Are you inferring that a million buyers in the UK alone are stupid and incapable of making good decisions?

No they just probably couldn't afford an iPhone or bought it before it came out
