At last with my PS3 I have a 1080p source for my 5-year old Pioneer PDP503! But....

On playing the UK release of Planet Earth on Blu Ray via my PS3, it still comes up at 1080i/60Hz - with noticeable motion judder. Doing random freeze frames there appear to be no interpolated frames on the disc (cf "Galapagos - see below) leading me to conclude that the disc is 1080i/50 and the PS3 is creating interpolated fields to raise the frame rate to 60Hz.

I also have the US release of Galapagos, which again plays at 1080i/60Hz, but random freeze frames in this case show that the material has been converted from 50Hz to 60Hz prior to disc mastering (Some freeze frames are half one frame and half another)

DVDs play back correctly at 625p/50...

So...

1) Can anyone (perhaps with a dedicated blu-ray player) confirm that Planet Earth is 1080i/50?

2) Does anyone know if the PS3 can playback HD video at 50Hz?

Thanks.
