Sounds like you have a very ancient analogue cordless phone.

Ditch it and replace it with a modern DECT phone.

Sounds like you are getting interference from an external source, Most common are medium wave transmitters nearby, a lot of the time your incoming wire from the telephone pole acts as an aerial.
If you can prove the problem by trying different telephones connected to where the main line comes in BT will attend and fit a RFI filter

If I plug my radio into the mains and set it to AM around 600khz I hear a click every second.
I think it's either interference from power lines or from electric fences.

I aslo hear interference on my corded phone.

You probably have a Radio Electical Inpulse Noise(REIN) problem cause by the electric fence, If you set your Radio to 612khz MW you will hear the noise. This can effect Broadband quite a bit.

More than likely just needs an engineer to fit an RF filter and it's job done. Alternatively, it could be an earth contact fault.

Yes have checked on the radio medium wave at around 612khz there is a click every second. I think the BT engineer fits the filter at the exchange and not my house......am I correct ??????

No, the filter is fitted at your end. It's not a particularly common job and I've only had one in the last 3 months.
