As someone who is thinking of changing their line rental from BT to another provider, is it necessary to get in contact with BT first to inform them that you no longer wish to pay line rental to them?

Thanks

I changed from BT to tiscali but it was all done by Tiscali....Get ready for constant calls from BT to 'come back' though.

Nope, the new provider should do all the work for you.

Don't do it. If you do, you will be unable to use any of the c heap telecom call providers - 18185, etc.

Only BT is forced to allow you to use them.
