'Ola, ran a few searches about this but to no avail.

For the last few years, I've been running one of those all-in-one 5.1 kits, which has served admirably, and migrated to my HDTV setup.

The problem is, I don't see how I can upgrade from here, as frankly I know sweet FA about amps/recievers (especially enbarassing considering I studied cybernetics for 3 years :S)

Basically, at the minute I'm rocking:

-Acoustic Solutions Surround Kit (Not sure of the model, but it's beech, has a sub with built-in DTS/Pro-Logic II decoder, has 5 speaker outs, a stero RCA in and an optical in).
-Samsung LE26R14B HDTV
-XBOX 360
-Nintendo Wii
-Sony PS2 Slimline
-iPod Dock Connector

That's at home, here in Halls the Speaker Kit's at home.

Generally, I want to run everything into a control centre so I'm not endlessly swapping component video and optical leads around every time I want to change system. I bought one of those Joytech ones, but it rapesthe signal form the Wii.

The other thing I want to do is make my sytem more modular, moving away from the all-in-one kit to something I can upgrade piecewise as I choose. The main reason for this atm is so I can run a 2.1 system in Halls, where space is a bit limited.

From my meagre understanding, I need 2 speakers and a sub (obviously) and then a reciever/amp/decoder of some sort, preferably one that can handle THX as sound's pretty important to me, if possible this would be able to decode 2.1/5.1/7.1 as well so I could use it back home on my full kit. Being able to take 3-4 component/optical inputs and feed them all into one TV output would be nice as well.

In short, what do I need? Preferably as cheap as possible without being unreliable, though I can keep an open mind on price.

Cheers.

what you need is an amp with hdmi inputs, as its the new scart and an amp would be perfect for this

THX means big bucks. ONKYO do one for £600 but THX speakers are dear

what you need is an amp that can handle hdmi ver 1.3

onkyo are the only ones that do this for £400 but its not THX

why hdmi? its the new scart

your option?

use your speakers you have at home, keep the onkyo at home and take the old one to college halls. Buy two speakers and centre ( budget ) and use that in college....................... you will probally wreck them when drunk and playing with wii!!!!!!!!

OK, the TX-SR605 looks fantastic for the price, I'm tempted by the 505 but feel I'd be gimping my setup a few years down the line.

Speaker-wise, I'll just nab a fairly cheap 5.1 set and upgrade piecewise.

Thanks for the links

That's one impressive setup! Although I don't have anything quite on par with that, I'm currently scanning the magazines for a similar sort of system, to replace my existing gear. If I find anything relevant, I will call back to post again.
