Am I expecting too much??

Hi, I`m on the look out for a good 46" LCD at the minute. From reviews I was keen on the latest Samsung 100Hz model and the 47" JVC (also 100HZ). The problem is I`ve been really unimpressed with what I`ve seen so far. My current picture on a 6 year old 32" Toshiba widescreen is much sharper and clearer. Obviously the HD and blu ray demos that most retailers show is going to be good but with normal freeview some of the pictures have been pretty shocking. I know I cant expect the full benefits without swiching to Sky HD but at present it just seems overpriced for such a limited selection of channels. So most of my viewing is going to be with Sky+ until HD takes off a bit more. Does anyone out their share my dissappointment with the range of TVs out their and how they show SD transmissions or am I just expecting too much??

The fundemental problem is the poor quality of the UK SD digital broadcasts, most of issues are hidden by CRT's but come to light on the larger more source critical HD displays.

Yes you can argue that a more expensive display should still provide a better picture but than again you can also say it is doing so and you are seeing the flaws in the broadcast more clearly.
Compare DVD to SD which both use the mpeg2 codec and they are like chalk and cheese just as DVD and HD are proving a HD display can provide better pictures when the source material is good.

That said there is no question that SD performance varies on flat panels and that is why a demo and honest opinions ( preferably from owners of panels you are interested in) are vastly important.
Manufacturers cut corners on scaling and de-interlacing chipsets and old panels are rebadged to appeal to areas within the market, it's a minefield out there

SD pictures upscaled by Sky HD via HDMI look great on large flat panel displays - yes there is not an extensive range of HD stuff yet but upgrade your + box to an HD box and see the benefit for SD as well as HD.

Thanks. Any particular models that stand out for praise?

My TV is a Panny TH42PX70 - I am very pleased with it being a die hard CRT fan.
