Well if the TV is HD (you don't actually say but I assume it is ) then it is already upscaling any source you give it to it's native resolution, you can buy an upscaling DVD player but the odds are anything within a fairly modest budget won't be significantly different from what you have now.

I just thought using an HDMI cable was better than using a scart cable for HD. The DVD player im using the now only has a scart not an HDMI. I guess the Freeview upscale boxes will not be up to much also then. I do have a freeview PVR conceted to my TV via scart also.

Well I would be using Component instead of RGB scart allowing the player to output a progressive signal if analogue is the only connection option atm.
As for HD well upscaled DVD is not HD so again if the DVD upscaling player performs the same or even at a lower level than the TV the HDMI may mean an inferior picture, too many variables to say for sure one way or another it does depend upon your budget and the capability of the TV.

As for HDMI well while a digital link removes a video conversion stage I would question it's overall benefit against buying a new player even in the budget range.

A top notch scaler can cost £1000-£2500 so perhaps that explains why £50 DVD upscalers and £500 HD displays fall short

It would be a good idea if know someone with an upscaling DVD player to try it out on your telly, it would answer the question for that particular model anyway.

I've got a samsung dvd-r136 with hdmi upscaler and am very dissapointed cant see any difference in picture quality at all.I've had to disconnect hd lead because of interference when switching on dvd. also causes distortion to any banners on display.even through component' my advice dont waste your money.

The Anchor Bay scaling on my Toshiba EP30 is very good. That chip would cost a couple of hundred short of a grand in a dedicated scaler, but it's in the EP30 which can be had for £200.

Yep, as you mention in the other thread it's goign to be hard work to justify catalogue HD titles when their DVD versions are a fraction of the price but with HD players in the same ball park as a mid-range DVD player then it's becoming a close call which to buy.

If they sort out multi-region for DVD's on HD players then it's really becoming a no-brainer for any consumer who wants more than the basic DVD at supermarket prices.

I may not ruch out and get a DVD upscale player then as there are mixed reviews about them.
