saw this in John Lewi the other day wand was a little shocked at the detail evident compared to normal DVD

just have some questions

1 how much typically are the players

2 are they widely supported by DVD manufacturers in terms of titles or is it still in it's infancy

3 is it possible to do DVD R - are they DVD writable

There are 2 competing standards right now, HD-DVD & Blu-Ray and you can't choose between them in terms of quality imo. Until one wins neither will ever be as widely supported in terms of titles as DVD.

The internal PC Blu-Ray Rom drives I've seen are able to burn DVDs. As for the standalone Blu-Ray players I've never seen one that can burn DVD & the cheapest ones available go for around £250.

Personally I wouldn't buy one although I do think Blu-Ray will eventually win (unfortunately) HD-DVD has a habit of upsetting the party so I wouldn't be happy choosing between them now. I would however buy a PS3 and one can be had for £300 but that's onyl a bargain if you know you'll play the games too.

With broadband speeds still pitiful, there will be plenty of growth in the Hi Def disc market.
