Hi there

My work is currently taking me driving all over the country - and I'm getting fed up with motorway service stations!

Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of other places to eat (greasy spoon caffs, nice pubs) etc off the main motorway and A route networks?

As I say, I go all over so all tips appreciated.

all best

Here is a good source to start with http://www.5minutesaway.co.uk. My personal favourite is Reghed just off the A66 / M6 junction.

The Reghed Centre is the same as Tebay services it's good but rather expensive, a good option is to use the cafes in supermarkets, Morrison's at Kendal is a good example.

Another option for a quick snack is to use the chuck wagons that are dotted about all over the countryside.

M6 junction 12. Head towards Cannock on the A5. You have The Hollies transport cafe (aka Greasy Lils) on the left about half a mile away, or another half mile on the right is another transport cafe (can't remember the name). In between the two there are 2 pubs, Tumbledown Farm and the Four Crosses, opposite each other.
Theres a start for ya!!

I have heard that this place is good on the M6 near J38

Tebay Services, it looks like a nice place, I've never been though.

I regulalrly travel North & South on M6 past The Tebay Services, well recommended, also I believe won an Egon Ronay award a year or two back.

Rheged, about a mile west of J40 on M6 also worth a stop

It is indeed, we always go there when we drive to Scotland

Isnt Tebay a service station? very expensive places. Best place is where lorry drivers go for their greasy (and cheap) food

rheged , while nice to stop at is hideously expensive , if you fancy a bacon buttie then head east instead of west and there is a little roadside buttie van

When we go up Newcastle we always stop off at Scotch Corner , A66 about 200yds from the junction of the A1. Their bacon or sausage barm cakes and brews are lovely and fresh. Lots of travellers use it, plus wagon drivers.

Yes, there are some promising-looking vans by the side of the A303 - often with lovely views - I keep meaning to stop off at them, but I'm always in a hurry!

I discovered a cafe near Sandbach Services. Go off the M6 at J17.

Also plenty of eating places in the nearby town. Parking is tricky on market days (Thursday) but not impossible.

We always try to find supermarkets off the motorway. As well as having a fairly decent cafe, they usually have much cheaper fuel than the motorway service stations too.

We also have a book called "off the motorway" which sits in the glovebox ready to consult.

I do a fair bit of driving for work. I have all the travel inn venues on my satnav as I find there are always some fairly close to main routes (careful not to pick one at a service station) and their restaurants are pretty good too.
