Does anyone else think these two sounds nigh on identical? I got my significant other to close their eyes on Saturday and tell me who they thought was singing, and other than the fact that we were watching X Factor and it was obviously Leon, they thought it could easily have been
Marti from Wet Wet Wet

Has anyone else noticed this or am I bonkers?

It's amazing that he is compared to Frank Sinatra, Micheal Buble and now Marti Pellow

And those three are so similar

Look, Leons performances are getting better, if you watch them wuth the perspective of him being a jazz performer some of them are quite good. However the Leon Fans are shooting themselves in the foot time after time with comments like this.

The ONLY thing they have in common is that they are both from Scotland.

I think his style is more "Hugh and Cry" that "Wet Wet Wet"

with his air of vulnerability and self conciousness of movement Leon reminds me of a young Rik Astley, I think they have a similar charm.

Young white guy with the voice of a black soul singer (and a tremendous one at that)

Not doing the lad any favours.

Don't compare him to anyone, he needs his own Identity and you're just giving the Rhydian fans more ammo

EDIT: to be fair you didn't compare voices so I may have posted this a bit too soon.

Why am I giving Rhyddian fans more ammo? I'm not into all this "support X to the death" business, I'm merely making an observation. Anyway, Marti Pellow has an amazing voice, surely it's a compliment? The fact that Leon is also pretty swoonsome whereas IMO Marti has all the sex appeal of a rabid goat means that Leon is in a strong position in the music world. Or at least would be if he hadn't whored himself out to Simon et al on X Factor, as now his career is probably done for.

Why thank you very much! I'm perplexed as to the replies on this thread though, I thought I was making quite an innocuous little statement and everyone either thinks I'm bonkers or compromising Leon's originality

I can recognise a good honest opinion when I see it posted I do agree with you that Leon is far better looking (not wanting to upset Marti fans BTW, only my opinion)

He's a good advert for the damage it does - saw him the other day and he looks about 60!

The reason you are doing him no favours is that by comparing an average Karaoke singer to Marti Pellow, one of the better voices in brittish pop is insane.

It was hot gossip in the days before Heat etc, by default of being just about the only gossip around! Yeah Marti used to smoke heroin, and when the band fell apart he became an addict and his life spiralled out of control etc...

Just try and listen to any of his songs in the same way now

Aw, I think Leon is better than an average karaoke singer, that's a bit harsh!

Anyway, the tone of their singing voice is very similar, what do you want me to do about it, lie?! i thought it might start an interesting discussion is all

The reason you are doing him no favours is that by comparing an average Karaoke singer to Freddie Mercury, who had one of the best voices in British music is insane.
I agree! Freddie must be spinning in his grave.

Bonkers.

Much as I like Leon, and I will grant you Leon has a lot of Marti's gestures and moves, his voice is nowhere near that of Marti's.

Like Marti, a young guy with one of the most exceptional and soulful voices this side of Luther Vandross. Not like Leon, charming and rather sweet but nowhere near in the same league vocally.
