I don't if anyone has brought this up before, as I'm new to the forum, but does anyone else think it's a little strange that two of the finalists aren't exactly 'amateurs.' So how is the X Factor an amateur talent contest? Can anyone explain?

It just seems a little unfair to make people who have a professional background compete against those who don't and I didn't think that was the point of the show.

Was it the same in previous years? I have no idea having never watched the show before this year.

I havent watched it before but i think you're always bound to have some people with more experience, especially once you get down to final 4

Most of the finalists are experienced and I prefer it that way. If they are going to win a major record contract, I would prefer it to go to someone who has at least tried to make it on their own and performances by people with no experience are often the most uncomfortable to watch (Phillip and Leon's early weeks come to mind) simply because they have never done anything like that before so are nervous wrecks when they get on stage whereas the people with years of singing in clubs and such can get on the stage and know how to give an enjoyable performance.

Surely the definition of professional means receiving recompense for performing? Have any of the acts done this? (I know Niki was under the tutelage of SAW many moons ago, but I wasn't aware she was making a living singing now?).

Happened last year with Leona who was already a recording artiste.

I was thinking more in terms of lots of voice training and if they've performed on stage a lot before. For example, you don't have to be commercially successful in order to consider yourself a professional musician. That's a good point about Niki, I don't know if she ever received recompense for going on tour when she was younger.

I agree it's a lot easier on the eyes watching someone who's comfortable performing on stage, but I wondered how that would affect the judges comments? They didn't seem to take this into account very often in their remarks.

Does the fact that some of them have a head start affect the way you view each of the contestants? For example, the fact that Rhydian has training or the fact that Leon was so nervous at the beginning. Does this make you more or less inclined to vote for them?

I vote for Leon because he is the cutest with the best voice. In other words he has the X-Factor. I certainly would not vote for Leon because he was nervous. I think it is quite natural and understandable for one so young to be nervous, especially with Simon's unfair criticism nearly tevery week.

Yeah, and also the Burger King Brothers were wedding singers and had plenty of experience too. Not that having experience is unfair though.

I agree with everything Insomniac said.

In your opinion

I don't think it should matter if people have previous experience or not. This kind of show is for people who have failed to make it big by themselves, so need the help of a show like this to get the recognition they do or do not reserve. In that way, if the public are voting for a winner, they're voting for the person who THEY want to see in concert, releasing an album, or who they feel is the most deserving of the recognition. Just because someone's had previous experience shouldn't count against them - if they are the best, then they are the best and should win, theres no point in saying 'oh, this person hasn't sang in clubs for a few months so has less experience so lets vote for them instead even though they are not as good'.

This same topic comes up again and again. I suggest you read my past threads on the matter.

Open auditions mean just that - everyone is allowed. Obviously the more experienced will be better than anyone who has just sung karaoke down the local boozer. The guy that won Any Dream Will Do (Lee Meed?) was a West End understudy for example...

Ah, sorry if it was a boring thread!

I had a feeling someone might have asked the question before

I wouldn't say so - perhaps more polished, or more at ease, rather than better.
