Hi
I have just burnt some home movies to DVD but although they play on my PS3 and my laptop they wont play on my DVD player. I have a Toshiba DVD player which is about 6 years old and I have used Impega DVD+R Discs (Free from work). Could it be my DVD player is just old spec or are discs the wrong type. I just get a message saying disc error check disc.

Thanks

Terry

If it's an old Toshiba you will probably find it will only play -R and not +R DVDs. I had the same problem a couple of years.

so if I bought a cheap dvd player would that be likely to work. I have no need for extra bits and pieces. Just to play the odd movie and home dvds

check the spec of your dvd writer, you may only nead to try writing to a different type dvd disk(DVD-R or +R) most new writers will write to both. If in doubt go -R

Too true. My top of the range Denon is very fussy about the disks it plays. Denon tell me it's because it's a precision piece of kit. Whilst the sub £100 Toshiba plays everything you throw at it even the ones covered with kids sticky finger marks.

Then they need to make something with less precision.

Reading from the DVD itself will not affect PQ at all (providing it works) so there's no excuse for making something that doesn't read many disks. It's the processing and conversion stages that affect the PQ which is where the denon is possibly superior despite having an inferior DVD drive.

Of course reliability also comes into it and it is possible that the Denon may be more reliable than the Tosh.

Thanks for the replies but in short i need to burn a lot of discs. I get the DVD +R from work free so in the long run it is better for me to use those discs. I am using my laptop to burn the DVD's so what I would like to know is, if I buy a new cheap DVD player what should I buy that will play those discs.

Thanks

yes buy a cheapo player and look at box to see what discs it can play

sometimes a change of disc is needed rather than the format
