What do you do with your old kit?
Being a bit of a geek with TVs/DVD recorders/Amps etc I can't resist upgrading stuff.
I did have or have spare, 2 small CRT TVs, 3 DVD players, a couple of Video Recorders (now dumped) and a FM Tuner Amp stuck up in the loft. It pains me to dump this stuff as it all works OK and due to postage expense I don't believe it's worth trying to sell on Ebay. I saw a bloke in Asda pick up a £20 DVD player the other day and felt like saying to him I've got one at home you can have for nothing if you come and get it. I'm sure some of you have similar stuff. Have you just thrown it? |

I'm quite lucky in that respect, Mrs Controller's uncle has four kids and because of disability he is the only one able to work. Being on one wage, they don't have a lot, so come upgrade time our stuff usually gets given to them.
I suppose some of it could be sold for a few quid on ebay or something, but I'd rather it went where it will be appreciated, and know that it is doing someone a genuine good turn. Just hope they remember me when they win the lottery.....

Usually goes round the family.
Years back you use to be able to trade in kit when upgrading. Very few dealers provide this service now days. |

On the net you can find a site called Freecycle--There will be a site in your area On this site you can offer your redundant stuff ,at no cost to yourself, but free to any one in your area that wants it They will collect I have given things away on here and also have aquired useful stuff |

Funnily enough, I have a list of stuff too that has migrated from loft to garage (TV/DVD/VCR speakers etc) and was wondering the same as I need my garage space for my ebaying activity.......
However, eventho I'm a dab hand at using eBay it pains me to take loads of photos and write ads when you know the stuff will only fetch a few pounds. I'm thinking about placing ONE ad in my local paper for a one day 'everything a fiver' garage sale - there will be some real bargains....... Would this be a goer? Rgds, Scorp |

I think you've got a few options.
If you want some cash for it, why not put it in your local paper / loot / newsagent window. That way you won't have the postage costs which you might with E-bay. If you want to get rid and don't want any cash for it, where I live the British Heart Foundation have a shop which deals solely in electricals and house goods. Might be worth mailing a couple of the charities and asking if they have similar outlets in your area. Somebody else has mentioned Freecycle, there's another option. |

I usually ask about to see if anyone is in need, if not it is sold on ebay or advertised in the local paper, possibly free to collector. I got rid of a monitor this way and they were so pleased to get something for free. When we moved into our latest rented house it came with a perfect but unwanted panasonic 21" CRT, my housemate just threw it out without even asking anyone, I was very annoyed at this as it seemed such a waste, I even know someone who would have taken it. Saying this our house is full of stuff nobody would ever want like old computers and vcrs, anyone want any?

Same comment as a previous poster.
I sometimes put stuff on Freecycle if it's fairly old so someone else can have the use of it. You can also get some good stuff on Freecycle as well. I don't like taking stuff to the tip if it works OK it seems such a shame to just bung it in the refuse skips. I'm still using my Iiyama CRT 17" monitor bought in 1998 and it still works great. |
