Also an unconfirmed spec list on the importers site

See i can bring more than just hummy news

That looks really smart - my (beloved) Thomson could be about to be replaced....

Nice

Does anyone know or can hazard a guess to whether it will be out for Xmas. Consider that Xmas (25th Dec!) is about 2 weeks away... and that for the box to reach us (the consumer) it has to be already rolling off the conveyor belt in the factory... etc...

What I'm to say, if I have the dosh, would I be able to pick one up before the Xmas hols? Unlikely?

Well, the word I'm hearing is still "around Xmas" which could be before or after - but in other words, no one has said to me "There's been a delay" either.

That said, obviously when they arrive at Turbosat, the UK distributor, they can sell them right away via their website. If smaller sellers have orders in then they'll probably get them on sale a few days after that, allowing for onward shipping. I'd expect that for larger retailers who operate their own distribution systems, it might take a bit longer, if things have to go to a central warehouse and then out again.

Ultimately, when it gets to the UK, it's a matter of logistics after that.

As you can imagine, I'm in pretty frequent contact with the importers about the TF5810 (and the update that will give the TF5800 Freeview Playback). When there's confirmed news, it gets up on the Toppy web site pretty swiftly, so if you use RSS, pick up the news feed from www.toppy.org.uk/news.php

You can also register your interest on Turbosat's site, too.

EDIT: Thanks for the info Nigel.

Looking at the turbosat site, is this bit true?

Quote:
“* Connect to your home computer via USB2.0 and transfer your MP3 collection on to the built-in hard drive

* USB 2.0 supported for fast PC interface”

I.e. does it really mean at Hi-speed USB2.0 (or again just Full-speed)...

Well, technically the TF5800 is hi speed - it's faster than full speed, and the signalling rate is hi speed.

It's merely that the chips that drive it, and the core software, don't manage to push the data through at anything approaching 480Mbps.

Those are pretty much exactly the same words as used to describe the USB on the 5800; until I get my hands on a 5810, I won't be able to compare the two speed-wise.

Thanks for this also. So I assume no hardware changes on that side of things (i.e. chipsets)...

So, just as an aside, has anyone made a 'son_t' cable modification (i.e. attached a IDE2USB device to the HDD internally and make it work for faster USB transfers?)

Yes if this is what you mean

There may be other hardware changes inside - we won't know until we get our hands on one of the boxes. One of the issues on the TF5800 is the USB driver chip, which is a more or less obsolete model. I do know some aspects of the board in the 5810 are different, but I don't know how far that extends.

I shall do my best to pull one apart as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Hi Nigel,

Do you have any information on whether the 5810 will change the behaviour of the Topfield when recording from standby in that, as I understand it, currently the Topfield switches on and activates the TV SCART output. In an environment with an IDTV or if you are watching a DVD, this would be quite annoying ...

Cheers,

Martin

There is a TAP available now ('deselect') courtesy or R2-D2 that goes some way to alleviate this problem on the TF5800.

As ever, check the Toppy.org.uk forums.

Glen.

That sounds good but it still seem odd to me that Topfield wouldn't correct it in the main firmware (since it obviously can be done) such that timer start up for recording doesn't enable the SCART output - I've used several other "Freeview" PVRs and this is the only one I've come across that doesn't record in the background from standby without interrupting TV viewing ...

No, unfortunately all existing Toppys have the problem hard-wired. The first "select" comes from the Loader, which is protected in flash memory (and I have been thankful that this bit is protected many times!). The only hope (albeit, extremely slim) is that Topfield decide to amend this for future machines.

A small piece of paper over (IIRC) pin 8 of the SCART connector does the trick...

Perhaps Topfield could provide a "tearout" in the manual!

Or merely pulling out pin 8 or covering pin 8 with sellotape, can stop auto switching.

If you've got the original manual from 2005/6, that's its most useful purpose.

All well and good if you want no switching at all - what I was looking for was a way to have it switch if I turn the box on from standby but not if it wakes itself up to do a recording.

The TF5810 also has an HDMI output so the behavior of that may be different to the SCART connection.

any news on a release date??
before christmas looks out of the question now..

I think most people have thought for a long time the likelihood of having these new machines out on general release up to Christmas optimistic. If anyones going to have a single batch available first its Turbosat the distributer though. I was told 2 weeks ago by them that it was going to be something like end of Jan. When I phoned they couldn't even confirm the choice of casing was made yet or the hard drive size that should go in them, but I think the main problem was having the software 100% ready as well. I called yesterday to see if one could be ordered sooner but its still a no. If they are going to be released soon by at least turbosat and you live in the London area and call them on Friday or Monday, you may be lucky and be able to pick one up you can wrap in time for Christmas. Give it a try.

They won't now have them for general sale before Xmas, sadly. They are on their way; unfortunately I don't have the technology to do a live map on my site, so we could track the GPS co-ordinates of the ship

The casing style and so forth is all sorted; I've even seen a finished one with Freeview Playback logo on the front.

The manual for the TF5810 is now available on the Topfield web site, and also from Toppy.org.uk, at www.toppy.org.uk/documents/

Y'all can admire the pretty new interface.
