I am a loyal Toppy (TF5800) user and I love it to bits. I've been reading through the manual for the forthcoming TF5810 and to be honest I'm a little disappointed that there have been no improvements to the interface etc (well only very minor colour changes). I would have hoped that Topfield may have listened to some of their customers and build in some of the features that we are all currently using TAPS to overcome!
To me it seems such a shame that the list of timers still doesn't include the programme name and the default interface still looks to have been designed by a child. When my current Toppy packs up of course I'll buy a TF5810 like probably most Toppy fans will, but only because I know I can customise it with TAPS, but I really think that Topfield are loosing lots of potential customers who just want to run a PVR straight out of the box.

Well, it's a lot more than minor changes to the interface - yes, there's a new colour scheme. There's also better english throughout, and more consistency too, so none of the different styles of window that pop up on the TF5800.
In fact, the list of timers does show programme names, as you can see from the screens I posted yesterday over on Toppy.org.uk; in various regards, the manual is not up to date with the latest firmware. And, of course, that particular change is one that's coming to the TF5800 too.
Personally, I think the new interface is a massive improvement over the old one, with all its rough edges. I'll probably post some more grabs from the 5810 over the next few days.

You haven't seen the latest screenshots then. The timers list now includes the programme name so the manual is already out of date!
The new interface is a big improvement over the garish colours and inconsistent graphics of the 5800. The reduced contrast between foreground and background colours will be a concern to some though.
The manual appears to suggest that it up-scales SD to 1080i over HDMI, have I read it correctly? This would be an interesting alternative to having the TV do it (may be better).
Is there auto-padding? Accurate recording/Series Links doesn't work unless the broadcasters support it and even those that do, they get it wrong. I'd prefer not to use Freeview Playback, just auto-padding.
Should it be set-up to use HDMI, will the audio still go down the optical as well to an AV receiver? I don't use the TV for sound but would want to use HDMI.

It does upscale over HDMI, which may be useful for some, depending on the quality of their TV's own upscaler.

Thanks for the reply. The up-scaling is something of interest because 46" LCD TV reviews show them to be average performers with Standard Def. Slightly OT, but I'm still a little tempted by Plasma, they tend to look better on SD to my eyes but on the other hand "true" 1080p/24 is rare on Plasma, *sigh*.
If it gets glowing reports on up-scaling SD, then I might be tempted. I really like my Hummy 99% of the time, but have been disappointed with the latest firmware. Padding AND series links is something that TAPS might give me on the Toppy along with HDMI and good up-scaling.

Well, assuming that the TAP authors (e.g. MyStuff et al) are able to easily tweak their TAPs (if any tweaking is needed), then auto-padding is already there and, at the moment, MyStuff Control Timers are (IMO) far more reliable than series link (until all the broadcasters get better at sending out the correct metadata information)...
