The connection socket for the headphone jack on my TV is in a rather awkward position. I was wondering if there was a way of putting on an extender of some sort so that when I wanted to use earphones, I could easily connect them, but when not in use, leave extender connected to TV. Would doing this prevent the TV speakers from working, or does that only occur when the headphones are actually conected? I hope this ramble makes sense!!

Makes perfect sense.

Yes, you can get them ....

And also yes, your sound will still cut off to the speakers with the extension only plugged in unless you have a specific setting option on the TV somewhere that allows you to switch speakers and headphone socket on and off independently (unlikely).

Strange - when my other half plugged the headphones into socket on rear of TV, we could hear sound through both the headphones and the TV at the same time!! Bit more investigating to do me thinks!

Depends on the TV - some mute the speakers, some don't. If it doesn't mute the speakers it's usually because they have a seperate headphone amplifer, and usually a seperate headphone volume on the menu somewhere.

As Nigel says, and I mentioned, they may well be independently controlled .... in which case, you've got lucky!
