I think last night showed that X Factor has always been about building a fan base to get anywhere in the competition.

Most people like at least one act each year and will sometimes overlook mistakes that other fans will jump on like a ton of bricks. Voting I believe then is all about how many people you can capture in the weeks you are there.

If we look at just last nights performances, Rhydian I would say is favourite, with perhaps Same Difference second and Leon third.

The reason for this is that Rhydian has mass appeal, operatic, flamboyant and a definite showman. Would appeal to most age groups and can sing a wider variety of styles the the other finalists.

Same Difference while appealing to a smaller age group (5 - 15), has one huge market to capture. It has already been shown by the likes of High School Musical that this is an area Sarah and Sean will do well in.

Leon is going to struggle though, he appeals to a wide age group. However this is more to do with his looks than his singing, grannies will love him, teenagers will idolise him and if he gets a good song right many people may like him. Could he be the UK version of Buble, I don't think so, but who knows what the future holds for any of them.

For the Niki fans, I struggled to think of a market for her that is not already bloated with the likes of Leona, Mariah, etc. Age group wise, the only ones I personally could think of are middle aged women or single mums like herself.

Maybe Nicki will get a job in the West End as she has a very powerful voice. A slight attitude adjustment wouldn't hurt either...

Leon IMO is nowhere near as good as Ray Quinn was last year, and Ray has just been dropped by his record label. Maybe the 'swing' phenomemon isn't big enough to accept more than one Michael Buble.

Same Difference will do well I feel because of their appeal to younger people. They should have a great pop or stage career.

Rhydian is multi-talented but is in danger of cr@p production and cr@p songs to sing as has been seen with previous winners. No doubt he will win as he is the best singer by a mile.

Good post. Of course it's all about building a fan base over several weeks of primetime TV so that when they release their first record it's sold out everywhere. I don't think any of the X Factor acts this year would sell so much so quickly without the show.

I also agree.

The same old chestnut crops up though with regard to that fan base. The large number of voters who consider themselves fans for the duration of the X-Factor aren't necessarily going to equate to album sales based on their voting patterns. Once the show ends very often so does their interest. The viewer feels that they have helped launch an artist by voting for them, but then seem to feel that their work is done.

Rhydian I would suppose has created enough interest through the media to be able to sell good amounts of music. He is well known the GBP by name, even if they haven't actually been watching the show

Same Difference I see as a short term recording option but will always be in work.

Leon may have an album off the back of the show and the tour, so another short term recording option, but I wonder just how many of the GBP will actually buy into him beyond that.

I know that some like to draw a comparison between Leon and Ray Quinn. However there is a big difference, in that Ray having been a Dance Champion when he was younger, plus having acting experience still has a lot more opportunity to continue in showbusiness. Leon is just going to be reliant on singing and that is a very hard path to tread.

I never think I am unique whenever I like a thing.....or dislike a thing

I have never liked or been so interested in anyone in any show like this, as I am about Leon Jackson. Not since Kurt Nilsen...and I have followed him closely.

I fully intend to buy Leon's music and see him concert. That's the effect he has had. Not everyone's choice, I acknowledge, but I think he's amazing enough to support beyond the XF.

So, I guess I'm saying I won't be the only one

I'm sure you won't ZipGypsy, but there is no guarantee that the support will be sufficient to carry Leon or Same Difference much beyond the middle of next year recording wise.

It's all surmise of course, and as they say, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. However, when you look back at previous X-Factors the trend does seem to be success based on the tour plus an album and then either being discarded or given very poor promotion. The only true support seems to be given to the Winner and only then if they can actually deliver convincingly.

I know that the very first X-Factor was a peculiar one, not that I watched it myself, in that the Winner didn't seem to fit requirements and G4 had the success. However, since that original glitch, the format seems to be as I've stated.

You're certainly not the only one. I have watched Popstars, Popstars the Rivals, Pop Idol and all the series of X Factor but Leon is my favourite out of all them. His voice does it for me. Louis said that he's sure to have a recording career so he must be wanting to sign him.

Louis is only a Manager, he doesn't record artists.

Louis doesn't have a record company and isn't an A & R scout for any record company. He's a manager. He can sign an act up to his management company but he then has to tout them to record companies to be signed.
