Hi

I'm on the Orange UK 6mb Blackberry data plan, because it allowed me to get the 8320 (they are the only carrier in the UK to have it)

However, I'm being told that I cannot get the fantastic Opera Mini browser to use Bberry plan data - it has to go via Orange's more expensive WAP gateway. This is a real pain in the ar*e as I dont want to have to spend extra cash to browse

Does anyone know of a way to circumvent this and get Opera to use BBerry plan data instead of off-plan data?

I know I could use wifi, but there's not always a network available (and to be honest, I'm having probs with wifi aswell )

On that note - how do I get Opera to use a wifi connection instead of WAP data?

Thanks
L

On a slightly related note, if you use Google Maps, Yahoo Go! 2.0 etc. on your blackberry, does the data used come out of the Blackberry data plan or WAP usage?

Can't see an easy way to tell (I'd hope all data comes out of Blackberry data plan, which confuses me when Opera Mini is said not to use it??)

Only Blackberry data comes out of your Blackberry plan. (ie, the applications supplied with the phone or officially available). Any third party applications will be rejected by the Blackberry servers and you will have to use Orange's servers.

Make phone calls, send and receive emails and access the Internet.

Is the official line.

Jesus... what a donkey this phone / plan is then. I did a fair bit of research but still feel short-changed. Should have gone with O2 and paid a bit more to get a bigger data allowance

Is it possible to return the phone when it was purchased in an Orange retail store?

If within 14 days yes.

Edit: Just spotted that the bloke above me works for Orange, so this may not be true. 14 days def for an Orange handset bought from CPW. I guess Orange "reward" you by buying direct from their shops by screwing you on this as it appears to be 7 days online! I think 7 is a legal requirement though.

Yeah, clearly they do screw you - not happy at all. Most goods bought in store - and that applies to anything - have a money back period

I'm unhappy with a) the fact that I am open to WAP charges because Orange's Bberry data plan is so miserly and b ) my phone being hamstrung because the network won't support potentially useful 3rd party apps

Do I have any statutory rights to support me on this? Who knows

I think we're all in the same boat about possibly incurring extra charges, except Orange seem to charge around £2.70 per megabyte for WAP, whilst o2 charge £1. And in your Blackberry data allowance, Orange allow 6mb while O2 allow 200mb.

I'm not 100% on this but I'll see on my next bill whether data used on Google Maps etc. use BB data or O2 data.

and b ) my phone being hamstrung because the network won't support potentially useful 3rd party apps
The phone and network will support all 3rd party apps, but you may have to pay extra for the data the apps use (as far as I understand)...

The 14 day change of mind period was removed on October 15th. It only applies to sales made over the web/phone because of the Distance Selling laws.

The thing is that your third party data will still not be included in the Blackberry plan. I always advise people to avoid Blackberry if they want to use things like Google Maps or Opera Mini. (Once bitten, twice shy) It is extra hassle to get them to run, they are often have fewer features than the standard version and then the data isn't covered by the Blackberry plan.

I feel mugged, I really do. Very annoying. Orange need to raise their ****ing data allowance on BBerrys to keep up with the newer multimedia features in the Curve and Pearl ranges.

Agreed, especially with the new 4.3 OS comes out, which supports video recording, and video e-mailing, then 6mb just won't cut it

Yeah I switched from Orange to O2, on the 8310....

Although perplexed about how much extra apps like Google Maps etc. are gonna cost (i'll wait for my bill on this, although haven't used it that much so far, just "playing"), happy that for e-mailing / internet browsing I'll never go over the 200mb fair usage amount

Old thread, but...

..did anyone on Orange work out if some data is included, and other data is charged?

I've worked out so far that with my Blackberry plan, all data is charged when I use the SIM in my Samsung i600

Also, because of changes at Blackberry and a new version of Opera Mini you can now use Opera Mini with BIS. (I think Google Maps works as well)
