Hi
I'm having a bit of trouble getting a VCR picture on my new set up, can anyone help, I have

JVC TV with 3 scart sockets
Sony HXD870 DVD Recorder 2 scart sockets
Grundig Freeview box 2 scart sockets
Hitachi VCR 2 scart sockets

I can record freeview on the DVD and watch freview at the same time with the digi box, but cannot record from the vcr to the DVD recorder, I want to get rid of all my videos and the vcr eventually.

Freeview TV Scart ---> DVDR input scart
DVDR output Scart --> TV scart

VCR scart ----> Freeview VCR scart

make sure everything is set to RGB (that can be) and that you use fully wired scarts to and from the DVDR.

When you press play on the VCR it will pass through the Freeview and you will be able to record onto DVD with no cable switching. You won't be able to watch Freeview via the box or DVDR whilst recording though so you'd probably want to start the recording overnight.

Thanks for the info, I can now record from the VCR, however, I cannot record freeview onto the DVDR and watch another freeview channel from the other digi box now? Before I moved the scarts the digi box was on AV1 and the DVDR was on AV3

I'm not familiar with the Sony DVDR but certainly on my Panny if you record automatically from the TV listings then the Freeview will pass through. It won't pass through if you are on the channel and press record.

If you can afford it I would replace the Grundig Freeview box with a dual channel PVR and use that for timeshifting/viewing. A PVR is much easier to use than a DVDR even one with a hard disk.

a slight re-jig will get you sorted:

VCR ---> DVDR AV2 (for copying tapes)
DVDR AV1 ---> TV AV1 (for watching DVDs or tapes)
Digi TV scart ---> TV AV2 (hopefully another RGB scart)

you can now record Freeview from the internal tuner in the DVDR while watching Freeview on TV AV2 via the digibox.

Good point, he wouldn't want to record Freeview off the Grundig anyway because of the inbuilt tuner. I guess I'm so used to all my tuners being PVRs (Sky+ and Freeview) where I do want to record off them onto DVD that I missed the obvious.

In Pobury's case though I would still swap the Grundig for a dual channel PVR - provided he can justify the cost of course.

Do Sony DVDRs not allow pass through when recording off the internal tuner? If so that would stop me ever getting one.

I'm not sure about Sony's. I'm only just getting to grips with Panny's updated rules on passthrough. My E55 wont allow it unless in standby.
