I have just purchased a pioneer DCS 370 system and I am trying to get sound out of my rear speakers when watching TV (Sky). I was told you need a optical cable from my sky box to my DVD player however, there is no optical input on my DVD.

Help!

I think you're knackered.

From the online specs I can see for that player, there is no 5.1 sound input available. Only standard line-in .... which will only get you stereo, not 5.1.

Thats the problem with building your sound into your DVD player, a lot of them have very limited inputs.

No help I know, but you're almost always better off with a standalone amp.

Totally agree. Why do people spend money on something that you can't attach other things to, then complain because you can't attach other things to it?

Nobody would have told you that because it doesn't make sense. A DVD player is not something that has inputs - a DVD player has outputs. What they would have told you is that you need an optical cable from your Sky box to your amp or receiver, but you haven't got an amp or receiver. Just a DVD player which comes with its own speakers. Not the same thing at all.

If it's as new as you suggest it is, return it and buy a separate DVD player and a separate AV amp or receiver plus speakers. With plenty of optical and coaxial inputs.

If the system has audio inputs available (phonos - Red/White) you may be able to listen to DPL/DPLII. To do this you will need to connect the audio outputs on the back of the Sky box with a pair of stereo phonos. Not DD but better than nothing.

I would recommend checking the specs first as many of these all in ones systems do not allow DPL via aux inputs, just allowing stereo playback, just another limitation of this type of entertainment system.

Sounds like I made the wrong choice

I have connected the 2 phonos but still only get sound out of the front 2 & sub.

Guess I will need an amp, any cheap recomendations that will solve my problem?

If you are getting sound out of the sub you should by rights be able to get audio via the rear speakers, might be a setting on the system you need to change, something like SURR/DPL/DPLII.

Saying this, you would be so much better off purchasing a system made up of separates.

Richer Sounds is a good place to start. The system below is under £200.

Yamaha RXV361

YamahaNSP110

Plenty of other receivers/speakers to choose from depending on your budget.

That's the combo I have and it's remarkably good given the price.

2 phono inputs will enable you to get Dolby Pro-Logic sound including the rear speakers if you set the thing up properly.

The rear sound will be pretty poor compared to Dolby Digital but all in one setups very often dont allow for connecting additional devices.

You should have checked first.

But you should be able to get a basic amp for £100 or a better one from a discontinued range.

Try Richer Sounds if you have one
