Does anyone know how much bandwidth a voip service uses if quality of call/standby used id 90kbs ?
I am on a 4mb broadband service, so how much of bandwidth will I loose per day for using voip receiving and making average amount of calls.

Tighten up the connections if they are loose.

Though maybe you meant lose.

Do you want bandwidth or amount of data download.

You've already answered your question in the post you made.

For bandwidth it would be 90kbps (If using G711 - the better quality codec) and 30kbps for G729.

Using G711 CODEC you download about 40 megabytes an hour

Using G729 CODEC you download about 13 megabytes an hour.

i have to say that reply made no sense at all to me.

i dont understand voip, all i know is the system used 90kbs as line quality
what i need to know is if my broadband connection is on 24 hours with voip connected, how much bandwidth do I lose cause of voip.
i have no idea what codec it uses.

Think TheFirstCut was emphasising the incorrect terminologies used in your post. In car analogy:

Bandwidth = speed of car
Data downloaded = distance travelled

As you haven't specified which VoIP service you're using, TheFirstCut posted a rough guide, as bandwidth used during a call and at idle will vary.

Most services use G.711, which is about 64Kb/sec (suppose around 90 with headers, etc), therefore would use about 40MB/hr. That's during a continuous call. During idle, it's virtually nothing.

Services such as Skype would use a lot more during idle as uses P2P technology.
