Surround Sound TV
I have a very old 25" Ferguson dolby Pro Logic tele with an integral centre and seperate front and rear speakers. Is there such an animal available now ? We've got the 5.1 cinema mallarkey covered with our Technics DVD hifi, I'd like to replace the old tele sometime but like to have surround sound all the time without having to fire up the hi-fi .

Why would you want to clutter the room with two lots of speakers? Surely it would be far simpler just to run a cable from TV to the Technics system?
Most of the TVs you see advertised with surround sound are actually a bundle of TV and separate Home cinema system. Not so far removed from what you have already. I can't think of a single system I've seen that has it all built into the TV. And as I say why put up with two lots of speakers anyway? |

To the OP, most TVs available now are slim-line HD Ready LCD and Plasma models - to attempt to incorporate large speakers into them would go totally against what most TV viewers today want, and would not be practical, if possible. People who are interested in watching programmes and films accompanied by surround sound would purchase an external surround sound amp or receiver (which is what you have already done). When you don't want the hassle of switching the external box on you don't really want to listen in surround sound - the simple stereo speakers to the left and right of the screen are enough for watching the news or Corrie. If you do want to listen to the programme you are watching in surround sound I would suggest you do switch your surround sound reciever and speakers on - surely it's not that big a job to do, and an AV amp is capable of producing a full DD/DTS surround sound - not just the DPL sound that an old TV is capable of. |
