Install iTunes.
Make a playlist using the file menu or the + sign at the bottom left.

Put your CDs in to the computer and let iTunes import them.

Drag the songs you want into the playlist you made.

Plug the iPod in.

When the main screen for that pops up in itunes click the second tab along the top then choose to sync with the playlist you made.

Now whatever you put into that playlist will get put on to the ipod every time you plug it in.

Lots of info here too

Install itunes.
Read the help files with iTunes if you have any difficulties.
Or let your 12 your old figure it out in 2 minutes.
