Full hd and freeview

Im away to get a new plasma and was thinking about either the 37/42" panny 'pz' or 'px' range, at the moment i only have freeview.

My question is, is it worth paying extra for the full hd 'pz' i.e. does freeview look ok on it or would the picture be better with the 'px' range?

It depends what you plan to be using it for and the cost, full HD screens cost more. I went for full HD because I'm going to connect my PC to it and watch BBC Hi Def stuff.

I'm sure I saw someone state that lower resolution screens show standard definition TV better that full HD ones, but someone will have to clarify that.

I watched my old Phillips 28in CRT for twenty years, so think ahead, don't want to miss out of the extra resolution a few years down the line.

Depends on the set, the Sony 40W2000 and 40W3000 series are full HD and spectacular on SD.

Personally I don't consider full HD worth it, to get any benefit you have to sit far too close to be able to watch SD TV.

I'm very impressed with the SD performance of my 42PZ70. I doubt SD pictures would look any better on the 42PX70. I made sure I was happy with the SD quality by visiting a John Lewis department store and having a play with a 42PZ70 before ordering online. With prices of full HD sets falling rapidly I had already decided it was worth waiting for a full HD plasma to reach my price range rather than buy lower resolution plasma and maybe regret the decision in the future.

I watched Once Upon A Time In America last night on my Samsung 46in Full HD looped through a scart and my Panasonic DVD recorder and I was in awe at the quality.

Every pore on Charles Bronsan's face, every wrinkle on Henry Fonda's. Blacks so crisp and dark while the rest of the scene was bright. As for the panorama, watching a film like this on a 16/9 screen is unbelievable.

My HDMI cable arrived this morning and the vertical banding has vanished now so I'm over the moon it wasn't the set that was faulty. They idiots sent me a scart instead of the HDMI - DVI cable I ordered so my PC gaming will have to wait, but I've always been unlucky so I expected something to wrong.

The picture was so good you didn't realise that you were watching Once Upon A Time In the West NOT Once Upon A Time In America!

The latter of these two Leone epics stars Robert de Niro.

Rgds,
Scorp (huge fan of Once Upon A Time In The West)

ps...........only joking, the Sammy is great!

Sorry, The West.

I'm going to watch it again when it comes back around, I want to see what Jack Elam's face looks like as the fly buzzes around him.

Sometimes the "standard HD" sets have better contrast than the "Full HD" set in the same range. Some of the Panasonic range it appears to be 10,000:1 vs 5,000:1

You could have recorded it to DVD......

I missed the start.

Makes you think, a film that old can look so amazing yet some of the new ones showing look terrible.

Even the last generation of Sony FullHD (40W2000) showed SD freeview in fantastic resolution.
