Sony RDR-HXD770, 870, 970, 1070 MultiRegion Hack

Remote Hack

I went to Argos and bought the One for all 6 (URC 7562)
Catalogue code 535/6209 £19.99

The user manual was wrong because it tells you to enter a 3 digit code when it only accepts 5 digits.
If you have another one for all remote, it may need the 3 digit codes, simply use the 5 digit codes below but remove the first two 0. So 00189 would be 189

If I say the DVD button blinks twice, it must do this, if it does not you must try the sequence again and again until it does blink twice.

prepare:
1. select dvd device on remote
2. hold magic button until the DVD button blinks twice
3. enter device code 0533 (DVD button blinks twice)

program buttons 1..5 with the following codes:

1 - 00189
2 - 00255
3 - 00095
4 - 00221
5 - 00079

1. hold magic button until the DVD button blinks twice
2. press 994 (DVD button blinks twice)
3. press magic
4. enter 5 digit code from above
5. press button (1..5) where to program it (DVD button blinks twice)
6. repeat steps 1 to 5 for all keys.

This hack only works if you change the command mode to "1" on the dvd player FIRST (see user manual = page 149). Once hack has been completed, you can change back to command mode "3", if necessary. Of course you need to set both the DVD player and the orginal DVD player remote to command mode "1". After making it region free you can change them to command mode "2", "3" or leave it on "1"

have a go:
1. remove disk, put player on standby
2. press 1,2,3,4,5 - player starts up.
3. press 1,2,3,4,5 - player shuts down and it says timer ok.

Thanks for posting this info,spoon261
No doubt helpful to many folks.

I've got an old One For All 4 (URC-7541) hanging around gathering dust so I decided to give this a try.

Obstacle No. 1 - it doesn't even have a DVD button, but the instructions tell you how to convert the AUX button into DVD.

To do this, press AUX, and hold down the Magic key till the AUX button flashes twice.

Press 992 and then VCR or SAT followed by AUX (yes I know it's neither of those but it works!).

End of story.

The instructions above will now read:

prepare:
1. select AUX device on remote
2. hold magic button until the AUX button blinks twice
3. enter device code 0533 (AUX button blinks twice) - Note: Still a 4-digit code

program buttons 1..5 with the following codes: Note - now three digit codes

1 - 189
2 - 255
3 - 095
4 - 221
5 - 079

1. hold magic button until the AUX button blinks twice
2. press 994 (AUX button blinks twice)
3. press magic
4. enter 3 digit code from above
5. press button (1..5) where to program it (AUX button blinks twice)
6. repeat steps 1 to 5 for all keys.

It works, and not bad for something that was just gathering dust - maybe I should offer it for rent and really make it earn its corn!

If a future software update reverses this, at least it'll cost me nothing to do the exercise again.

We have already had a software update and the multiregion hack was not removed by it.

I also expect this to always be the case, a lot of Sonys are sold by shops as multiregion (they hack them).
If sony removed the hack with a software update, a lot of shops would be very angry.
Also its in Sonys interest for them to be multiregion, else customers will buy another brand.

OK, I didn't know that. I did a software update before doing the hack.

Is there a cheaper remote than the one for £20 that can do this?

I was having trouble programming the remote control to assign each button(using a URC-7550 remote), so if you are having similar problems just do the following:

Set your Remote Command Mode to 1 in the Initial Setup menu of your DVD player, as specified in the other posts.

Then set up your one-for-all remote to control the DVD player:
1. select dvd/vcr device on remote
2. hold magic button until the DVD button blinks twice
3. enter device code 0533 (DVD button blinks twice)

Put the DVD player into standby mode.

Note - during the following keep your remote pointing at the DVD recorder so that the codes are received correctly. You don't need to hold the magic button, just press it briefly to tell the remote you are entering a code afterwards.
Enter the following sequence (you probably need to add '00' to the front of the 3-digit codes if your remote uses 5 digits):

Press magic
Type 189
Press magic
Type 255
Press magic
Type 095
Press magic
Type 221
Press magic
Type 079

The player should start up, wait a minute to ensure your player is ready to accept further commands (it may not accept commands until the hard disk is ready, if you have one).

Repeat the previous step (pointing the remote at the DVD player):

Press magic
Type 189
Press magic
Type 255
Press magic
Type 095
Press magic
Type 221
Press magic
Type 079

The player should shut down and it says timer ok.

Now when you switch on again you should be able to play discs from any region.

I have an RDR HDX 870.

To hack it you /could/ go buy a 6 in 1 remote and use the published methods.

Or you could go to your local maplin and build yourself all you need for about £3.00

I don't take or wish to take credit for either the circuit design or Method.

you need the following components:

1 2N7000 Transistor MOSFET.
1 100 ohm resistor
1 100 K resistor
1 PP3 battery clip (+ battery)
1 IR led.
1 9 Pin D socket.
Optional - 1 diode.

If you don't have a Bread Board, they are about £3.00

Build the transmitter part of the circuit circuit at:
http://www.veg.nildram.co.uk/remfaq.htm#q7
For a 9 Pin D you want pin 3 and pin 5.
25 way is pin 2 and 7.
I didn't need the "NOTE" Diode, in fact with the diode in it didn't work.....

Goto http://www.selen.org/sonydvd.html
Follow the instructions.

I used a VERY old win 95 Lappy with a com port. I can confirm it appears to work on win XP but I already had my player hacked so ....
You will probably need a propper com port rather than a USB / card / whatever.

Some laptops have an IRDA port that appears as a com port. If you have one it will probably work as is.

Message me if you want photo of my circuit.

Try Here I did this with my laptop and a floppy disk.
Set the remote on the Sony to command1 first.
Point 8 is now wrong as it does not come up with "SUCCESS" I think it was "TIMER ON"???? Not sure.

Just check with your BIOS what com2 port is set fot the IR.

Worked fine for me first time.
