Perhaps dervish meant Dennis Wheatley, the author who wrote about GHOSTS (and shares the same initials as Doctor Who).

I always love a good dervish thread.

Robert Hardy is a great actor but at 82 does dervish really think he could film a full season of DW, or even want to? The guy is semi-retired and chooses his projects very selectively.

I won't even comment on the other two but Derek Thompson? Dervish keeps holding him up as some bastian of British acting talent. Now as much childhood affection as I have for Casualty and the character of Charlie he really is a one note, very limted range actor, without much charisma. That all works perfectly for the 'grey' character of Charlie but as DW? There's more chance of Boris Johnson being offered the role (and would probably do a better job)

If we're going down this road then I'd have to suggest Reg Hollis off The Bill with June Ackland as his assistant.

A winning combination

Davison's finale (Caves of Androzani) was immensley dark, IMHO.

But not remotely as dark as, say, the death of the Racnoss children. No Doctor before Eccleston has had a scene that dark.

Nah, has to be Sgt. Cryer (Eric Richards) with June Ackland. Bob Cryer was everyone's uncle, and he had plenty of gravitas.

Ok. Reg as The Master then

OMG! Bring on the Biggins!

Hmm, whatever, I'm not bothered whether the Doctor is old or young, however its been rather fun having a sexy Doctor, I love some UST of a Saturday tea time, I think I would miss it.

Damn all these young, FAKE actors...

Why doesn't the Who production team learn that you cannot gain the ability to act until you turn 50??

Hiring people under that age will kill the series, obviously no-one wants to watch young men failing at being the Doctor, they need someone as old as possible to fill the role!!

Is Patrick Moore doing anything recently? Maybe he should be the next Dr?

Yes, amazing that gravity didn't take hold of that enormous hooter of his & pull him forward/down.

o/t is Reg still in it? He's the only one I miss from not watching anymore.

Every direct response to this increasingly silly little man and his increasingly pointless comments,
is simply "feeding the troll". The best thing to do, is to simply ignore the irritant, he'll eventually
get bored and go elsewhere to spread his nonsense ramblings.

It's clear that dervish is stuck in the past, and favours "Classic" Doctor Who, and would rather
that the newly updated version of Doctor Who should be a close to the old series as possible.

But, Doctor Who has moved with the times. It's no longer the cheesy low budget, and mostly
studio based show that it once was. It's now a fresh, modern, high budget show, complete
with a combination of a new audience that had never even heard of Doctor Who before
along with many viewers that enjoyed the "Classic" 1963-89 series.

It is time that foolish little people like dervish moved with the times as well.

I would say though, that if Doctor Who hadn't been axed in 1989, and continued throughout
the 1990's, to the present day, it would have gradually evolved into what it is now anyway.
There's no way it would've got halfway through the 90's with it's original format.

Sure it would've had still it's rough patches, with a fair share of crap episodes, and plenty
of (mostly tabloid) speculation and gossip on whether it would end up being axed or not.
But eitherway, we would still have ended up with an evolved version of Doctor Who
that wouldn't be too dissimilar to what we have now.”

Offensive and unnecessaryily.

Let's have a young girl travelling with an old man she calls "grandfather".

I'd say someone in their late thirties or early forties for the next doctor. Not too old as to alienate the "youth-orientated" image but older than Tennant at least.

I mean, someone around Tom Baker's age when he got the part (40) would do nicely.

The show has gone off track, not because of the Doctor .... but because of the totally cr@p writing by RTD

I am now watching the last of the season (Last of the TimeLords) ... the third and final episode

What total rubbish .... let Moffat write and control Dr Who

Eccleston was about 40 when he did it. That's sort of the ideal age. They probably originally didn't think they'd ever go for someone nearer 30, like Tennant, but then they just couldn't resist casting him. From The Runaway Bride onwards he owned the role anyway, so he was certainly the right choice.

As for the next Doctor, please let's NOT have a really well-known TV actor. Tennant wasn't THAT well-known and that was a good thing. Eccleston had done loads of TV and film but didn't have a big profile so that helped too. You have to totally buy the actor as the Doctor and not be thinking of his previous roles. Like, there's no way I could buy someone like James Nesbitt in the role. Really bad choice that would be.

Must admit I agree with Aerology - there's just a 'something' about Tennant that puts me off. In his darker or 'normal' moments he's mesmerising (except for the OTT Last of the Timelords when they had their Peter Pan moment). I think it's the hyper shouty thing I really just don't get. Okay that's just a personal thing, but just because the show now has a big budget, celebrity guest stars (which I'm not keen on, it doesn't need it) and scenery that doesn't wobble, it doesn't mean it's necessarly vastly better than some of the older series. Some were real clunkers, of course, as are some of the recent series, but I can remember the impact some made on me 20, 30 or 40 years ago - and that's just watching it once as video didn't exist then.
