Summary Of Ota Cures
bixieupnorth
16-12-2007
after trawling thru the pros and cons, praises and complaints since we upgraded to v2.0 what exactly are we hoping the jan 14th OTA will actually improve on??

realising that the AR side of things is out of humax's control i'd like the following resolved:-

1. finished recordings to disappear from list as soon as they've been recorded regardless of whether theres another episode in EPG or not

2. the red record logo will appear in the EPG whenever theres a recording booked, whether it be manually, series linked, or weekly record etc

i'm sure theres loads more but i'm full of a cold today so my heads not thinkin straight, plus i'm still sulking a bit at having to format 200GB of recordings (see other posts)

cheers

i'm surprised there's been no replies or comments on this topic so far, despite a huge amount of viewings??

i guess its too similar to the 5 wishes topic etc

i just wanted to summarize what we were all hoping for into one easy subject heading, some of the others on similar subject matter have diversified and warped into meandering chains on and off topic, and i find it hard to pin down what we actually hope this new update might achieve

so i'll try again, with my personal list (in no particular order of desire)

1. finished recordings to disappear from list as soon as they've been recorded regardless of whether theres another episode in EPG or not

2. the red record logo will appear in the EPG whenever theres a recording booked, whether it be manually, series linked, or weekly record etc

3. folders

4. EPG stays populated

5. be able access EPG while recording or watching

6. bbc one to appear at top of EPG regardless of what channel is being viewed at time

7. series link to be able to be padded if required

cheers

Hi bixieupnorth, thanks for the list, however I think it's a bit too optimistic for items 3 4 and 7, imho.

1. Finished recordings need to stay in the list so they can be joined to the next episode (when it appears in the EPG). They also need to be available so the user can cancel them if they wish.
2. The logo does appear for manual and series link recordings. For repeat recordings you cant really show it. You can't guarantee that the prog will be at the same time as the current one.
3. Humax have said they will not be doing folders. (They actually said they weren't possible but I don't believe them).
4. Humax know this is the number one request but it probably won't get done until after Freeview Playback is completed. They may evn have moved on to a new model by then and updates will stop.
5. It's not hard to stop, then access EPG. I can't see a reason they couldn't add this but I'd rather they did other things first.
6. Why should that happen? What if your channel list is in a different order? I can't see anything wrong with showing the current channel. Also if you press 1 while on another channel the EPG will jump to BBC1. Is that one extra button press too much?
7. Would be nice to have padding & series link together but I don't know if Humax consider it worthwhile.

All I want fixed is the issue that causes the Humax to lock-up solid if it doesn't like something in the MHEG.

What use are bells and whistles if the box crashes?

They might possibly be refering to the bug with autopadding where (non-series) recordings sometimes remain in the list. I think that particular bug is/has been fixed, as that was the reason the OTA was pulled.

There also seems to be a bug that prevents series being picked up after a gap greater than a week despite appearing in the schedule list (with the old time/date).

Maybe this could be a user configured option?

Don't see the point of this one at all, if I'm on flim4 I don't want to have to scroll all the way down to see what's coming on later.

The problem here is the word 'Folder' - I accept that the file system might not be able to support folders, but want people want is some method of grouping files in 'expandable groups'.

This could all be done with the filename where the system add a prefix to indicate the group - and the firmware displays the files based upon the group name.

From the user point of view this would be exactly the same as 'folders'.

It seems so simple to do I feel that I could do it...

Why not drop the .mp3, .jpg and the games and use the folders/space they take up?

This would surely give more memory space for some nice improvements.

You'd be surprised at just how useful folders are when you have a lot of recordings on a machine. Having both the Toppy and the HUMAX I really do miss this feature on the HUMAX. It not only allows you to group your recordings together but it also allows you to name them eg CSI - series 7. By grouping them together logically you can also reduce the amount of recordings on the main page list to just those you haven't seen yet or sorted and so it saves a lot of trawling around or searching for something. Folders are a godsend IMO.

Wouldn't be a great deal of use for me. I generally delete after viewing - although of course I might not always do so in the future, I suppose.
