Everyone has an iPod and I never bought into the hype, but I am wondering what can an iPod do that my Sony Ericsson W880 can't?

Use iTunes, the worlds largest online music store.

Let you store a lot more songs. 8GB M2 card vs. 160GB iPod Classic? I know which one I'd choose...

How is the chance to use a good music store bad?

You can but a SE phone would only be able to play iTunes + tracks. All the others come with DRM so would only work with an iPod.

6 million tunes on available on my desktop, music videos, TV shows and films all within a couple of clicks. Billions of songs downloaded across the world - many people seem to like it.

I have a Sony Ericsson phone but use an iPod. I like just plugging it in, buying things on iTunes, putting them on the iPod. I can download videos and put them straight on there.

Also, I love cover-flow. I can flick through my albums and don't get a sore thumb from pressing buttons, because it's a touch sensitive wheel! I pod battery lasts up to 24 hours playing music, phone would last less than half of that playing music.

And let's face it, the iPod is just the thing to have really. It's a music marvel.

Haha I love the seething jealousy from those that cannot afford or have inferior products to the iPod.

The Ipod is not an elitist player anymore, you can get them for £100 now, and they are the most popular mp3 players by hundreds of times more than their nearest competitor.

I'm guessing that you don't have an iPod then!

As for your choice of language, nice.

Envy and foul language, you're a credit to the nation.

Woah, this is getting a bit interesting.

I have just joined the iPod faternity, but only as a mate gave me his old 10gig 3rd gen (thanks to those who helped me on my other thread).

I have to say I love it, but truth of the matter is i only wanted it to use as i was jogging and while i am driving. given that neither of these scenarios need the best sound quality in the world, i was going to get an 8gig flash card from my Nokia (around £60).

In short (yeah, right), if you just need something to listen to music on as you are moving around then I think a phone is fine. And let's face it, far more convient than carrying a second device with you, AND it is also a phone...

However, if you want all the bells and whistle (and the fantastic cover-flow, which mine is too old to do), then you should go Apple.

As always, it just depends on what you want out of a device.

This is a good subject... apart from it only says Sony Ericsson phone. I know have better music players if they are the 'walkman' brand, but i find nothing wrong with my bog standard Nokia 6300.
I also never bought into the iPod hype, and probably never will.
I got a 2gb memory card in my phone, which at current i dont use half of it, but have about 5 albums on there - which to be honest, dont even get through in one go so i dont see the point in having more memory... unless you travel about 6 hours everyday

I understand alot use this iTunes and therefore have an iPod to synchonize it all, but for someone who doesnt use iTunes and who doesnt listen to a million songs a day... iPods are completely useless to me.

So my personal answer to the question - 'What Can An Ipod Do Me Mobile Phone Can;t?' would be - Nothing!!

You can't make phone calls on an ipod!

ipods ARE over-rated and over-hyped though, at the end of the day they're just an MP3 player like any other on the market.

Over hyped, yes. But why over rated?

Surely owning the iPhone would solve this problem for you?

Or you can burn them to CD and re-rip, removing any DRM and letting you use them on any device.

ipods only out-sell competitors because of branding. They're no better and no worse than other leading brands. iPod are easy to use, Creative give better sound quality, Archos are better all rounders, and the Cowon A3 is the best player on the market.

ipods, especially the iTouch, are also expensive.

I agree with you, all mp3 players use basically the same internal hardware for the HD, screen, sound processing etc, all that is different is the software and the store it's tied into, and even then there are usually ways round that. Mind you, I don't think anyone else makes a 160Gb model yet.

If you have money to burn maybe.

If you're happy to end up with sub-standard quality copies, yes.

Couldn't have put it better myself. (A2 owner ... blows my wifes iPod away on sound quality)

Fixed that bit!

I actually use my phone (K750i with 1gb) as a backup MP3 player. Handy in the car or if I'm going to the pub and don't want to take my main player for fear of losing it in a drunken haze.

Burning MP3 to Audio CD using Nero or similar = lossless

Ripping back from CD to MP3 = virtually lossless, provided you rip to a higher bit rate than the original. And since iTunes tracks are 128kbps that's means 192kbps, which is still nice and small.

And no, I mean iTouch (though the iPhone is overpriced too). £200 for 8Gb?! Complete rip-off, especially since it's inoperable in your pocket. When do you ever get your player out and look at the screen to change the volume or skip a track?

Have a look here: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/12/18/top_five_mp3/ for the best around, as written by a bloke who sells them all, including ipods. Apple don't feature.

there's an ipod touch in the top 5.

So there is. I miscounted, sorry!

My friend has one, and I played with it a bit. It's a very nice gadget. Sill overpriced, though.

So you're happy to take a decidedly average quality MP3, burn it to CD, re-rip at a higher bitrate and use that?!?!?

You get a lower quality file, that takes up more space than it did in the first place plus all the burning and ripping you need to do to get there?

On you go .....

If I took the time, I could probably come up with 50 better ways of getting there!
