I'm doubtful that we'll ever replace our SD versions of Potter, TBH. I'm tempted by Bourne though it would require me to buy more hardware...

The HD potter looks good so never say never especially if the usual online retailers slash boxset prices months later
The bane of double dipping...

I rate the Bourne trilogy up there with the best of the spy sagas and action movies (don't even think most of the Bonds in the last 20 years even come close).”

I enjoyed the first two Bourne outings, looking forward to the third installment, though it's only SD DVD, my fault for buying the PS3 so near to xmas.

My BluRay collection is only small at the moment, only 4 discs, watched Die Hard 4.0, Happy Feet and Casino Royal so far, have 300 to watch and The Transporter is in the post. PQ is very good, but what has really stood out for me is the uncompressed audio, just waiting for Sony to get the MA software uploaded.

What has frustrated me, which I didn't expect, is the region coding for BluRay, reminds of when I only had a region 2 DVD player. There are a few discs I would buy now but they aren't available over here. I suppose having Sky HD will help with certain titles.

Haven't a clue on which format will be the surviver here, or if there will be a winner, I suppose this will be down to the movie studios.

Paramount will go Blu-ray in a year or so then you can double dip
Well I can't see any circumstance that results in Blu-ray movies not being released, well a major world conflict but that's about it so I think you are safe.

The PCM option isn't a big selling point for me, lossless or even high bitrate DD+ is fine given my setup but at least you have the kit to appreciate the format at it's best so I respect your opinion. I find it amusing when someone with a "cheap" amp and no doubt bundled speakers exccels the virtues of uncompressed audio

I just watched the latest Bourne movie and Hi Def really didn't make that much of an impact on it.

Some films are made for it though, Transformers gives you goosebumps watching in 1080.

I'll probably reconsider if/when they release all seven as a boxed set.

It is one of those movies (well the whole trilogy) that has a dirty/grainy look to it, for many that is not the ideal for viewing in HD despite the style being chosen for the much higher demands of a theatrical screening (quality of the cinema not withstanding ).

I think it's a safe bet that in 4 years at most there will be a 7 movie boxset

Can't wait, suppose I'll have to be patient. The funny thing is I didn't buy the PS3 for BluRay, it was mainly for the games, I initially bought one movie as I was just curious about the video/audio quality, now I'm hooked.

I feel I haven't got the best out of it yet as it's hooked up to my Denon in the front room at the moment, my dedicated room is halfway through an upgrade at present, can't wait to get it installed in there.

Popped out today and Blade Runner (Final Cut) jumped into the shopping basket.

Don't know if you are interested, but LoveFilm have a 3 for 2 offer on at the moment, all titles £17-97.

http://shop.lovefilm.com/lovefilm/lo...ce=WID20071218

Tesco's have also got a 3 for 2 offer on until 14/1/08, all titles £17.

Stunning piece of work and really does show how a restoration and a little tweaking can make a 25 year old movie look cutting edge. I got the £19.95 HD DVD 5 disc release, bargain of the year compared to every other movie puchase

I'm still waiting for my copy of the 5 disk Blade Runner on BD to be delivered. I'm gonna have to chase it up.

OTOH, I just plowed into the 3 for 2 offers at Play!

Spidey 1,2 and 3, 300, Starship Troopers, Pirates 1, Chicago, Life of Brian, Enter the Dragon, Blood Diamond, and Hitch-Hikers guide to the Galaxy. All at pretty good prices to begin with. Best Blu Ray bargain to date!

I'm a Blu Ray newbie and usually shop online.
But for Christmas I was given a £20 HMV gift card. So I went to my local branch for a disc and couldn't believe their prices! £25 for most titles, some even £30. Out of principle I bought a couple of DVDs instead. They really need to look at their pricing policy.

High Street prices. Play and even amazon do some good deals. There are some @ £13, majority @ £17 and only the newest titles @ £25. You can get the whole Spidey trilogy for £26, and it's also in the "buy 2 get a third one free", so works out even cheaper.

Another win for blu ray same 61:39 ratio

David Vaughn

61-39 BD for the third week in a row.

Top 5:

The Kingdom
The Bourne Ultimatum
POTC 3
Simpsons Movie
Rush Hour 3

Top 10 SI
300 Blue Ray
Transfomrers
POTC 3
Casino Royale
Planet Earth HD DVD
The Bourne Ultimatum
300 HD DVD
Spiderman 3
Planet Earth BD
Ratatouille

Notables for the week:

Volume Down from previous 2 weeks
13 of the Top 20 are BD titles.
PE on BD outsold the HD DVD 56:44, but with very low numbers overall.
There are now 9 titles over the 6 figure mark. 5-BD and 4-HD DVD.

I think that that statement is the most interesting one.

How so?

My interpretation only

Five or four figure volume sales for the majority of the releases don't really spell comfortable profit margins for either format where as big sellers certainly do especially in terms of unit cost at the production level which offsets dual layer BD probably more than dual layer HD DVD do. So if the 5 to 4 in favour of Blu-ray for 100,000+ sellers is correct then that says two viable formats not one despite the playback units in circulation.

Just another aspect of the market which will be taken into account as and when any studio considers support or lack there of.

What are the HD DVD's selling at that level, Transformers, 300 and Shrek3 I assume but which is the other one and perhaps Casino Royal, 300 and Spiderman3 for Blu but what about the other two?
smcbeath

I was meaning as in the sales are very poor overall If you combined both formats how many out of the 9 titles would have over 100,000 sales. I assume that warner will have a few of the 9 representing on both formats, the 300 and the departed spring to mind, so overall hdm is not doing so well.

If i were to guess at the titles over 100k combined they would be

300
departed
transformers
casino royale
planet earth (last i read it was 100k hd dvd and 65k blu)
pirates
spiderman

It would be great if anyone has overall sales figures for the top titles.

Well where would be without wide of the mark speculation

I still think 9 titles over 100,000 is still impressive given the dominance of DVD and the much lower step up HD gives compared to VHS to DVD not to mention the format war.

Given the sales figures i dont know why all the film studios are not supporting both foramts to try and maximise there profits. If they all went neutral then all the fence sitters would start buying hdm, rather than leaving it up to the hardware to fight out the war.

Well that is the crux of the matter

SONY have zero interest in helping out HD DVD and made sure by buying up smaller studios (not that MGM is small) they alone had a huge chunk of the potential releases tied up. As for Disney and FOX they are traditional the DRM freaks and BD+ has the edge over anything HD DVD can provide regardless of the fact BD+ get bypassed or hacked everytime.
Paramount obviously had a financial incentive to go HD DVD only but there was logic in backing the cheaper format which has more chance of hitting the "cheap" prices quickly which is needed for mainstream acceptance.
As for Universal and for a similar reason Warner (with Blu-ray versions of existing HD DVD releases still MIA) it probably had a lot to do with the finalised spec and features Blu-ray was not capable of at the time.

If it wasn't for the promise the PS3 still holds for SONY I think we would be much closer to both main parties getting together and embracing the dual format player but barring a surprise on either side I think we are in for a stalemate this year.

CES could be fun though, you never know

I expected something in the format war to happen at CES but not a couple of days before and I had hoped Warner was selling enough to justify the continued support of a format that provides them every feature they desire unlike BD whose lack of 1.1 has delayed certain movies time and time again, thank god that Blade Runner got out before the HD DVD version was withdrawn.

So on a personal note... nuts!

So any speculation what sort of cash or licensing considerations did they get out of this deal then

There's some rumour on Hidefdigest that there was a $450m payoff. Another rumour is that WB wanted to go exclusive one way or another to end the format war, but was only prepared to do Red if another major Studio joined it. Apparently Fox got cold feet, so Warner bailed on the notion of Red exclusivity, and went Blu. AFAICT it's not confirmed that New Line and HBO will follow suit, though it looks pretty likely.

ION, the HD DVD PRG have pulled out of CES 2008.

It'll be interesting to see how Paramount and Universal will react to this.
