Alesha had dance training before SCD

From what I can see of Alesha's biography she has attended at least one dance academy

From Wikipedia
"she met Sabrina Washington when they both joined Dance Attic (a popular hip-hop/jazz dance academy in West London)"

So she came into SCD with a dance background whereas most of the other dancers start with no dance experience at all.

Is that why she dances so well week, after week, after week? Has she got an unfair advantage over the other dancers? (including Matt and Gethin).

I thought there must be a reason why she is probably one of the best dancers I have seen on SCD to date.

So is this fair when all the celebreties don't start from the same point?

this has already been done to death!
Matt D has also had some dance experience, as has kelly, letitia and a few others...
The majority of celebs have!

With that background she is bound to be better than others.

Gabby was a gymnast though. She was good but didn't do "expressive". Alesha can do the drama side of things.

Impossible to take an entire bunch of 2-left-footed-numpty-celebs!!!

So it's not exactly a level playing field. But Letitia has performance experience - as does Matt DA.

It's a tricky one for sure.

gabby - international gymnast
Kelly, matt, letitia - stage school
Gethin - musical ability
any sportsman - used to training, being dedicated

they all bring something to the table, as far as I'm aware none of them have trained in ballroom and latin disciplines

let's not go over it all again!!

ps and others have training before they start SCD

So did Matt Di, or are we not meant to talk about that?

This old chestnut again, eh?

Hip hop dancing is rather different from ballroom.

If you were to eliminate anyone with any dance background then you'd have to get rid of the actors/actresses and singers, most of who have done some form of dance at some point.

As long as they've never been taught ballroom then I have no problem with whatever their background is.

You could say the sports men and women have an advantage because of their fitness and ability to train for extensive periods of time. Everyone's got something they can bring to the competition.

There is dance and dance.

We get this every year, Emma and Louisa had the same said about them in 2006 (& as someone above has said, it has been done to death this year!). People don't seem to realise that jigging about, however expressive, is not the same as ballroom and Latin. Neither are gymnastics the same as dancing, which was evident in Gaby's performances, good though she was.

Craig said something on ITT a while back - not about Alesha but about those contestants who have done a bit of dancing, like the ones who went to stage school or pop stars - that the style they learned is programmed into their memory and they have to completely re-programme to learn ballroom and Latin. Not exactly his words but that was the gist.

Many of us here would consider ourselves fair dancers, we've enjoyed discos and clubs, parties, etc. We know how to move. However, without training, we would not know how to do a waltz or a tango. It is more than steps, it's posture, hold, attitude. Very difficult indeed. I think both Matt and Alesha are doing famously.

You mean that if I attend a jazz class in my local gym as an adult, that constitute dance training? If she was trained from young, she wouldn't have the problem with her feet. That's something that a trained dancer wouldn't have

i agrre that alesha may have an advantege but it is fair to say that it is unfair..you could also say that the sports people have an advantage of being naturally competitive

And was introduced to a music industry type in her 2nd week and her music career was launched shortly afterwards? The ever reliable wiki author clearly forgot that bit.

According to Alesha, she lived in Hertfordshire at the time and attended the West London classes for a few weeks but stopped as her fledgling music career and the distance meant she had no time to do so. And she only ever attended once a week, pay as you go. And it was hip hop/street dance so just a step up from aerobics!

You know, the one great thing about banging your head on a brick wall - it's great when you stop.
