iPod Newbie

Hi all,

A friend has just given me his old iPod as a crimbo present (i'm not proud, happy to take seconds as can't really afford a new one).

It is one of the second (i think) generation ones with a 10gig hard-disk. As he is totally a mac boy, he only has a dock>firewire cable with it. I have ordered a dock>USB cable from ebay so i can sync it.

Anyhooos, what i wanted to know is; is the firmware/software on the iPod updatable? will coverflow work on such an old model? are there any issues with these models that i should be aware of?

cheers

Good question about the compatability - what happens if you set your iPod up on a PC then change to an iMac?

For me it's the other way around. The guy who gave me it uses Macs exclusively, where as I am a PC boy.
I have selected the Master Reset, but until the cable arrives I can't test it connected.

Does anyone know if it can be re-registered, as it now has a legit new owner?

Note - If you sync your ipod with a mac first it will not work with windows when putting it in a windows , it'll ask you to format it.

But if you sync with windows first then use it with a mac there both compatible.

Theres a reset option in itunes once you conect it to itunes

you can update the software on the ipod up to a point. when you plug it in, itunes will tell what software version the ipod has and it will check for a newer version. but you won't be able to update to the software versions that have coverflow. anyway, your screen isn't colour so even if you could it wouldn't look good.

So how do i avoid the above, given that it has been used on a mac for a couple of years and is now heading PCward?

I really don't want to trash my new old toy!

lol, when you put it in the windows, it will tell you to reformat it, it won't accept it because its windows (well i've got a newer ipod, not the newest but newer lol and it done that and it also done that with my ipod nano 1st gen) But when you reformat it, open it with itunes then you'll need to do stuff there, but just follow there instructions, it's really easy.

Cheers for this, but can i just clarify one thing.
Do i allow XP to reformat the iPod, or do i just access it via iTunes and use that instead?

Sit back, relax and let iTunes take care of it.

I don't think it matters, itunes will just say something but all options will be blanked out and you only have one option which is fo rit to have a reset or something, its just that the xp usb bit comes up first so it'll tell you to do it that way, doesn't really matter what way you do it i don't think.

1. connect ipod
2. itunes opens automatically (if not, open itunes)
3. 'do you want to format this ipod' YES you do
4 itunes formats the ipod, and will sync (mirror your itunes on pc to ipod) straight away.
done!

I think that was only 1st gen, as 2nd gen onwards supported USB - although only for syncing for upto 3rd(?) gen . It'll need firewire or the wall charger to charge.

EDIT - I lie - 3rd gen was the first with the dock. OP, are you sure it isn't a third gen, which has four touch buttons above the wheel (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61688)

The connector at the bottom is one of the long thin ones. And yeah, it does have four buttons above the click wheel.
Does this mean it will be ok in terms of sync/formating via USB?

Yep, so it'll be fine. I want a 3rd gen loooads. My Classic is getting slightly scruffy, bloody knomo case leaving scratches on back.
