Do any or the major supermarkets stock it?

Thanks.

I think Waitrose does.

I also believe they have developed a 'cruelty free' foie gras - one of the supermarkets has.

It is nigh on impossible to get the proper stuff now. It's all factory farmed and is both cruel and nothing compared to the real 'free range' stuff. Though it must be said, even the free range stuff still involves force feeding a goose. Though it is yummy

I would never eat or buy it. They way it is produced is so cruel

I would be glad if none of our supermarkets stocked it.

I can remember seeing film of the methods used when I was really young and the image has stayed with me ever since.

It's the fattened liver of a duck or goose force fed by a tube straight into it's stomach.

I wouldn't buy it, but have eaten and been given it many times and it is delicious.

Ethically, I think the free-range stuff is OK to eat because the birds naturally gorge themselves in preparation for winter making their livers fatty to see them through colder times - or so I'm told. Didn't the Romans notice them doing this and just helped the process along by force feeding the birds?

It is undeniably cruel but also undeniably delicious. I don't like it cooked particularly as it can turn into a slick quite easily.

This might appease those against it and answer the OP's question: http://www.talkingretail.com/news/76...lty-free.ehtml

I was half right then - it is Waitrose that does the 'cruelty free' version.

Yay, StressMonkey! Well-spotted. Will you be buying some now that you know it's not produced the horrible way? Must say I'm tempted.

Just a question for all those who have stated that it's cruel. Do you eat battery chicken? (And that includes just about any chicken eaten in a restaurant, fast food place, or sandwich joint.) Because IMO that's far more cruel. And it takes place on a much, much larger scale.

I am tempted. The free range is soooo expensive and I wouldn't touch the factory farmed sh!t. Mmm. Have to give it a go.

No, I don't eat battery farmed chicken.

But, imagine battery farmed chickens being force fed through a tube down the throat. That is what commercial foie gras production is, except with geese. So, actually, factory farmed foie gras is more cruel. Though, yes, on a smaller scale.

Isn't all 'factory' farming cruel? Even with organic/free range farming the animal still meets a premature end

Battery chicken farming in this country and beyond is a total disgrace, imagine being cooped up without even having enough room to turn around, with legs not strong enough to support your body weight because of lack of exercise, the result of which is that the chicken sits in a pool of its own excrement all day. In some instances, they even weld off their beaks to stop them attacking another in frustration.

I'm not saying that foie gras production is not cruel, but according to reports (including Hugh Fernley Whittingstall's, for whom I have a lot of respect) if done humanely, the geese actually enjoy it and queue up for their turn. Which makes sense, because what they are doing is over eating, which many of us enjoy, at least at the time, even if it isn't good for us.

Foie gras production is an easy target because the market is so small. Battery chicken farming is a massive, powerful, industry and has a much more significant effect on the economy. So it's not in the government's interest to encourage criticism.

My moral is boycott all battery chicken, but you are doing that anyway

The Hugh Fernley Whittingstall style foie gras is what I refer to as 'free range'. The geese are force fed, but in a 'kinder' way.

What I am talking about as cruel is exactly the conditions you describe about chicken, except with the added cruelty of a tube down the throat and so over fed that the liver is bloated to the point of added suffering to the goose. It produces a much cheaper, but much, much inferior product. It may be an easy target, but a legitimate one.
