I don't understand the concept of the big shop.

Shops are open again on Boxing Day ao why the fuss?

We have people coming over. They're bringing the seafood, veggies and fruit (he works at the wholesale market), so I shall pop out on Christmas Eve (probably the afternoon) and buy dessert, grog and a box of chocolates.

Blimey. These shopping tales make me glad that it's only me and my OH for Xmas. Already got food in the freezer for Christmas day and nibbles for Boxing day. The corner shop is open on Xmas day and Boxing Day and the bigger shops will be open again on the 27th for the madness of the sales.

We made it. We're still alive.

We arrived at about nine and were done by eleven, and that included time for a small breakfast in the cafe.

Managed to get most of what we wanted, although our local Tesco is a bit crap (since they got clothes in the shop they've been stocking less of everything else) so we're going to do a final smaller shop in the high street before Christmas Eve. But the experience was pretty painless. Not many people, no kids as they are still at school here...it was easy to move around and most people weren't too miserable looking. Was shocked at Tesco though. You'd have no idea there was one week until Christmas. The

only indication they have is a few lousey cardboard cutout trees dotted about and a bit of music (and most of it not even Christmassy) played so low you could barely hear it. It's like they didn't want to acknowledge it at all and it was actually quite depressing...I'm not a massive Christmas fan but when anywhere puts in that little effort it's a bit of a downer. A shame...I don't think it's much better in the high street, although it's still better than Tesco. I still can't get over it. Our Tesco has been on a decline for years when it comes to acknowleding Christmas but I've never seem it that bad anywhere.

Going elsewhere at Xmas, only thing I'm buying is a tin of choccies & a box of wine.

Years ago when supermarkets started opening 24hrs, me & some workmates had the great idea of going to do the big shop in the middle of the night. Got there at around 1am to find there was very little in the way of food, still waiting deliveries, so much for that idea.

Nope. Most of the stuff we got is in-date until at least the 28th. After Boxing Day it's usually easy enough to go back to your normal shopping routine again.

My son and I have decided to go to Sainsbury's at 6amon Xmas eve, and get it over with. We'd go earlier but they don't stay open all night.

I prefer to get the food in on Xmas eve because I like it to be as fresh as possible - The plan is then to not have to buy any more food for a week

I've got a delivery slot booked for Saturday afternoon, just need to remember to tweak it accordingly on Friday.

You won't see me anywhere near a major supermarket chain at this time of year.

I live opposite a Tescos extra that is only closed for Christmas day so I aren't getting myself stressed out buying enough food for a month when I can nip over the road when i need something. Why do people go so mad & buy so much, half of it ends up wasted anyway, madness.

Tesco sent out an email saying you could book from December 4th for Christmas Eve, three weeks in advance. I logged on at twenty to nine in the morning, to find all the slots gone. Apparently, people sit up all night to make sure they get a slot. Christmas shopping isn't that bad!
I'll be onto that next year

Totally agree, if the shops are only closed for one bloody day, why the mass panic? It really is dull to buy so much. How much can people eat on that one day?
makes you wonder how we all managed when EVERY shop was closed on a Sunday.....

I'm making my 'treat' shop tommorrow where I buy unjustifiable amounts of sugar laden food and alcohol...normally at least a trolley full and fill the fridge with Hagen Daaz

Then on Sunday I'm driving up to Kielder to an organic farm to pick up my fresh Chrimbo veggies and turkey....mmm

I'm doing the big shop on Thursday - and then I'm not stepping foot in a supermarket for as long as possible.

Today, mother, nan and I embark on our traditional yearly Christmas food shop. Hopefully, we'll all make it out alive. Last year every single person in the supermarket looked like they wanted to brutally murder each other, it was really stressful. Everyone appeared on the verge of a nervous breakdown...people were literally gritting their teeth and swearing a lot as they tried to shop. There were so many people you couldn't breathe, let alone move about properly.

Where do you do your Christmas food shop? When do you do it? Anyone else not done theirs yet? Anyone got any horror stories of past Christmas shops to share?
Lol, we've not done ours yet. We're gonna get the final presents tomorrow and the food on saturday.

I did my food & pressie shop yesterday.
I was really surprised at how quiet the shops were......it was the same on Friday. No queues at the checkouts & parking spaces. Very odd.

Splashing out eh?!

I don't have to do a big Christmas food shop thankfully. I will, however, have to visit the supermarket at some point in the next few days for my usual weekly shop. Not looking forward to it, but I don't need too much this week, so it shouldn't be too bad.
